Manchester United Sign Carlos Baleba for £70m
Manchester United have landed their midfield marquee signing, completing a deal for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba worth up to £70m and underlining a radical rebuild at the heart of Michael Carrick’s team.
The 22-year-old Cameroon international becomes United’s third midfield arrival of the summer, following Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, as the club reacts to Casemiro’s departure and a serious knee injury to Manuel Ugarte.
A long chase finally ends
United pushed hard for Baleba last summer but backed off when Brighton made clear he was going nowhere. They waited. Brighton held firm. The move looked dead.
A year on, the picture changed. United reignited their interest a week ago and this time did not take no for an answer, striking a £65m agreement with a further £5m in add-ons and a sell-on clause. Baleba signs a five-year contract with an option for an extra 12 months, a commitment that speaks to how central he is to the club’s plans.
His arrival takes United’s spending on midfielders this window to around £148m. It also signals a decisive shift towards youth and energy in an area that had started to look tired.
‘The club of my dreams’
Baleba did not sugarcoat what the move means to him.
“It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams,” he said. “Playing at Old Trafford is always special but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour.
“I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick. His experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level.
“The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear, the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together.”
Those words will land well with a fanbase that has demanded both talent and hunger from new signings. Baleba brings both, even if last season at Brighton did not fully showcase his best form.
Backing potential, not just form
United’s recruitment team never lost faith in the midfielder’s ceiling. While his performances dipped at times last season, the club viewed that as a blip rather than a warning sign and moved decisively once the opportunity re-emerged.
Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, left no doubt about how highly the club rate their new signing.
“Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further. He brings a unique combination of qualities that will really complement our squad,” Wilcox said.
“We are delighted to further strengthen our midfield with the addition of another established senior international with a proven track record of performing in the Premier League.”
Carrick’s new engine room
With Santos, Tielemans and now Baleba through the door, Carrick suddenly has a very different set of tools in midfield. Casemiro’s exit and Ugarte’s injury had threatened to rip the spine out of United’s side; instead, the club has responded with a sweeping overhaul.
Baleba arrives as more than a squad option. The fee, the contract length, the timing of the move – all point to a player expected to grow into a central role in a new-look United.
Old Trafford has its next midfield project. The question now is how quickly Baleba can turn potential into dominance in the Premier League’s fiercest spotlight.
