Manchester United Sign Chelsea’s Andrey Santos for Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has found its next pillar – and it comes from a Premier League rival’s backyard.

United have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos, a move that underlines just how aggressively Michael Carrick intends to reshape the heart of his team after Casemiro’s departure this summer.

United strike deal for Santos

According to David Ornstein, United have agreed a package worth £48 million plus £2m in easily achievable add-ons for the 22-year-old, with Chelsea also inserting a 10% sell-on clause. Santos has been granted permission to undergo a medical with United, and personal terms are already in place.

It is a decisive play. Chelsea rate Santos highly and were not short of offers, with multiple clubs circling over the summer. United, though, have won that race – helped by a key factor: the player’s desire for regular starts. At Old Trafford, the pathway looks clearer, the role more defined.

Carrick has spent the window searching for a midfielder who can anchor his side without being chained to the centre circle. United initially pushed hard for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and came up short. The profile, however, never changed: a modern hybrid who can operate as a 6, step up as an 8, and glide between both roles as the game demands.

Santos fits that template almost perfectly.

The hybrid United have been chasing

United’s business in the middle of the park has not stopped at one name. Ederson was effectively wrapped up early in the summer, only for the move to stall when United requested a second medical. That caution hasn’t dulled their intent; if anything, it has sharpened it.

Carrick wants two new midfielders, not one, to replace Casemiro’s presence and evolve the team’s structure. Ederson offers energy and bite. Santos brings versatility and a different kind of control.

The Brazilian can sit deep, break up play, and still surge into attacking zones with the ball at his feet. He is comfortable receiving under pressure, driving past markers, and knitting transitions together. For a coach who once dictated games from deep himself, Santos offers a toolbox Carrick will recognise and relish.

Maresca’s verdict: ‘excellent’ in multiple roles

Chelsea have always known what they had. Early last season, then-Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca highlighted exactly why Santos has become so sought after.

“Andrey was excellent,” Maresca said after one win. “His position is the position he played today. With us most of the time he has been playing a little bit higher, in the pocket. In that [deeper] position we have Moi, so we try to find solutions for Andrey. We are aware his position is the one he played today.”

That assessment tells the story. Santos has operated higher up, in pockets between the lines, but his natural zone lies deeper, where he can see the whole pitch and influence both sides of the ball. United are buying into that duality: a player who can shield the back line and still carry the ball into dangerous areas.

For Chelsea, it is a talented asset cashed in at a premium. For United, it is a statement that the midfield is being rebuilt not just to cope, but to dominate.

Now the medical and final signatures stand between Carrick and a revamped engine room. If Santos and Ederson both walk through the door, Old Trafford’s midfield will look – and play – very differently when the season kicks into gear.
