Manchester United’s 5-0 demolition of Ipswich Town in Premier League 2 on Monday night did more than light up Leigh Sports Village. It sharpened the focus on two teenagers whose futures are already being shaped at first-team level: Harry Amass and JJ Gabriel.
Amass impresses – but loan exit looms
Harry Amass has spent the summer living in the shadow of Luke Shaw, but not shrinking in it.
The 19-year-old left-back has featured as Shaw’s understudy in pre-season and arrives off the back of an eye-catching loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday last season. That run, though, tailed off after a mid-season switch to Norwich City was disrupted by injury, halting his momentum just as it was building.
Despite United failing to bring in a senior left-back during this transfer window, Michael Carrick revealed that Amass could still walk out of Old Trafford before Tuesday’s deadline – on a temporary basis.
Carrick, speaking about the situation, made it clear the door is open for a loan rather than a permanent sale, with a short-term move now viewed as the most likely outcome.
“It comes to this stage [of the window], and there's always a little bit where, and this is not just Harry by the way, this is just the stage of the window and putting squads together and dynamics of changes, and younger players and loans and not loans, and all sorts of different scenarios.
“I think we always try to do the best for each individual player, as well as keeping the group strong. I've been really pleased with Harry. I think he had a really good season that didn't finish so good with the injury, but it's been great to have him around pre-season. He's done really well. So, let's see what happens. But he played really well the other night.”
The message is clear: United rate him. They just believe regular minutes might matter more than a seat on the bench.
JJ Gabriel announces himself in style
While Amass’s path is being plotted carefully, JJ Gabriel is still in the early chapters of his story – and he is writing them quickly.
On his competitive debut for the U-21s, the 15-year-old forward produced the kind of performance that makes people sit up. One stunning goal. Two assists. A constant threat in a game United controlled from the first whistle.
Carrick was in the stands at Leigh Sports Village to watch it unfold, and he left hugely encouraged by both the result and the manner of it.
“I thought the boys played ever so well, actually,” he said. “Really good team, really strong team that we had, and you could see that the quality. I really enjoyed the game.
“Really pleased with the boys, the way they went about it. The quality, the attitude, everything about the game was really good. So, really encouraged by that.”
Then came the nod to Gabriel, whose rise through the age groups has already pushed him into first-team training sessions.
“JJ is one of the boys. He's obviously got a really big talent. He's trained with us quite a bit. He's getting experience all the time. He's physically adapting to each step that he makes, and just continuing his development.”
United know the hype can arrive faster than the body at that age. The plan, for now, is steady: keep him around the senior setup, test him at U-21 level, and let his game – and frame – catch up with his talent.
Amass stands on the brink of a loan that could define his season. Gabriel, still only 15, is just starting to taste the level he ultimately wants to own. Two very different stages, one shared question: how far can they go from here?
