Manchester United's Midfield Rebuild: Ugarte, Tchouameni, and More
Manchester United’s summer is starting to take shape, and all roads lead to one department: midfield. The club’s recruitment plan is sharpening, targets are emerging, and a few unlikely voices are joining the conversation.
What’s clear is this: United intend to rip up the centre of the pitch and start again.
Ugarte Back on the Radar – and Back in the Headlines
Manuel Ugarte’s name has resurfaced around Old Trafford, but the story stretches beyond England.
According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Galatasaray hold strong interest in the Uruguayan, who is expected to leave Manchester United this summer. Several Serie A clubs are circling as well, sensing an opportunity if United decide to cash in.
Ugarte could already have been in Istanbul. Almost a year ago, he was described as a “very concrete” topic at Galatasaray, with talks held over a move to Turkiye. The deal never materialised, the trail went cold, and he stayed put.
Now the question returns: will the Turkish champions come back for him ahead of the 2026/27 season, or has that window closed for good?
Luke Littler Enters the Debate – and Calls Out Tchouameni
Into this swirl of transfer noise steps an unlikely figure: darts phenomenon Luke Littler.
A Manchester United fan and world champion on the oche, Littler has waded into midfield politics with a direct message for Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni. Speaking to SportsBoom, he urged the Frenchman to move to Old Trafford as Casemiro’s successor.
He referenced recent training ground flashpoints at Real Madrid and turned them into a plea.
“I'm sure you've seen some scrapping going on in Real Madrid and we're interested in Tchouameni. Come on Tchouameni, come on, replace Casemiro for that defence midfielder spot,” he said.
Littler didn’t stop there. He also backed Michael Carrick to become United’s permanent head coach, even while acknowledging concerns that he could follow a similar path to Ole Gunnar Solskjær. For a teenager, he is not shy of big opinions on big calls.
Cole Palmer Off the Table as Priorities Shift
While United cast the net wide in midfield, one high-profile attacking name has quietly dropped off the list.
Cole Palmer, a standout for Chelsea and briefly linked with a move to Old Trafford, is no longer viewed as a realistic summer target. According to The Mirror, United’s hierarchy have ruled out a move, deciding that the focus must shift away from the forward line.
Last summer was about firepower. This one is about balance. Midfield and defence have been identified as the areas in need of urgent surgery, even with Palmer potentially open to a move if Chelsea miss out on next season’s Champions League – a competition he has publicly insisted the club must be part of.
United, though, are resisting the temptation. The rebuild has to follow a plan, not a headline.
Turbulence at Real Madrid Opens a Door
Back in Spain, Tchouameni’s situation has taken a dramatic turn.
The France international has struggled for consistent minutes at Real Madrid, and tension inside the dressing room has spilled into public view. An altercation with Federico Valverde led to a Real statement confirming Valverde had been taken to hospital.
The fallout has been significant. Spanish outlet AS report that Real Madrid have “opened the exit door” for Tchouameni, with the club said to be fully aware of a fractured dressing room and ready to offload some star names.
Tchouameni is one of the players being discussed. For United, who are searching for a long-term replacement for Casemiro, this is exactly the type of opening that rarely appears twice.
Forest Duo on the Watchlist as Champions League Door Closes
United’s recruitment drive is not limited to the elite tier of European giants.
Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson has emerged as another major target. The 23-year-old has caught the eye of both Manchester clubs, with Manchester City currently viewed as leading the race for his signature.
Yet United have been handed a quiet boost. Forest’s hopes of Champions League football next season are over after they were knocked out of the Europa League semi-finals by Aston Villa on Thursday night. With that, the chances of Anderson staying at Forest have “dwindled significantly”.
He is not alone. Defender Murillo, also linked with a move to Old Trafford, faces the same crossroads. Without top-level European football, Forest may struggle to keep hold of either player.
Tonali, Juventus and a £150m Midfield Overhaul
At the top end of United’s shortlist sits Sandro Tonali.
The Newcastle United midfielder is one of several names strongly linked with Old Trafford. Juventus are keen as well, but reports from Tuttomercatoweb suggest the Italian giants cannot match Newcastle’s €100million (£86m) valuation.
United can. More than that, the report claims they are already “readying an offer”.
The scale of the rebuild is stark. Three midfielders are expected to arrive this summer, with around £150m reportedly ring-fenced for those additions alone.
Ugarte’s future hangs in the balance. Tchouameni’s position in Madrid is under threat. Anderson and Murillo may be prised from Forest. Tonali sits behind a nine-figure price tag.
United have made their choice: this summer, the heart of the team will be torn out and rebuilt. The only question now is which of these names will be wearing red when the first ball of the new season is kicked.
