Manchester United's Midfield Overhaul: Ederson and Fernandes Targets
Manchester United are bracing for a summer of upheaval in midfield – and the outline of Erik ten Hag’s next engine room is starting to take shape.
Casemiro, brilliant but 34 and out of contract, is being allowed to walk away on a free. Manuel Ugarte, signed for £50.5 million and never truly convincing, is up for sale. Two big earners out, two big roles vacant. United have decided this is the moment to rip up the old script and write a new one.
Ederson first in line
Atalanta’s Ederson is closest to the door marked “Old Trafford”.
talkSPORT report that United are “closing in” on a deal for the Brazilian worth up to £43m, with negotiations at an advanced stage. The midfielder has already given the move the green light and is ready to commit to a five-year contract.
United want his power and intensity at the heart of their rebuild. Ederson offers legs, aggression and a willingness to do the dirty work that Casemiro once made look effortless. The difference now is age and trajectory. Casemiro has given them a superb season, but the club hierarchy have made a cold, strategic call: the next midfield must be built for what’s coming, not what’s gone.
If all goes to plan, Ederson will be the first brick laid.
The Fernandes plan
The second, potentially more glamorous piece of the puzzle is Mateus Fernandes.
United’s long pursuit of Elliot Anderson appears to be over, with the Newcastle midfielder expected to join Manchester City instead. That setback has pushed United towards West Ham’s 21-year-old, and they have moved quickly.
According to CaughtOffside, United now “lead the race” for Fernandes and have become the “strongest contenders” after accelerating talks with his representatives. The groundwork is in place, the conversations are advanced, and crucially, the player is keen.
Fernandes is eager to play Champions League football and is attracted by the idea of lining up alongside his compatriot and namesake, Bruno Fernandes. The prospect of a Portuguese double act in United’s midfield has not gone unnoticed at Old Trafford.
He is not short of admirers. Arsenal like him as a potential replacement for Christian Norgaard. Chelsea, Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are all monitoring the situation. Yet United have pushed themselves to the front of the queue by moving earlier and harder than the rest.
The price is significant but not as eye-watering as once feared. Earlier reports suggested a fee as high as £80m. CaughtOffside now claim West Ham’s relegation has altered the landscape, with Fernandes available in the €50–60m range – roughly £43–52m. For a 21-year-old with his upside and resale value, that figure will tempt a club trying to rebuild smartly rather than just expensively.
The expectation is clear: land Ederson, then go “serious” on Fernandes.
A full-scale midfield reset
This is not a tweak. It is a reset.
Casemiro’s exit on a free and Ugarte’s likely departure open the door for a very different profile of midfield. Younger, more mobile, more durable across a long season. United’s recruitment team see this as a chance to redraw the spine of the side rather than patch it.
And they may not stop at two.
The Daily Mail’s United correspondent, Chris Wheeler, reported on May 20 that the club are planning a further £20m move for an additional midfield option, with Southampton’s Shea Charles on their list. That would make three new midfielders in one window – a complete overhaul of the department that so often defines a team’s identity.
For years, United’s midfield has been a recurring argument: too slow, too disjointed, too reliant on moments rather than control. Now the club are committing serious money and serious intent to fix it.
Ederson to bring bite. Fernandes to bring craft and energy. Possibly Charles to add depth and versatility.
The question is no longer whether United will change their midfield. It’s how quickly this new-look unit can turn potential into authority in the games that matter most.
