Manchester United's Left-Back Search Hits Snag with Joaquin Seys

Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has hit a major snag, with Club Brugge making it clear that Joaquin Seys is going nowhere this summer.

The 21-year-old, high on United’s list of targets for Michael Carrick, is effectively off the market. Reports in Belgium say Brugge consider a sale “out of the question” in this window and are ready to turn down what would be a record offer for the club.

Seys is central to that stance. He has started all three of Brugge’s games this season after a standout 2023-24 campaign in which he made 55 appearances, scored five times and added eight assists. He is no longer a prospect on the fringes. He is a cornerstone, and Brugge are acting like it.

United have not yet tested that resolve with a formal bid. Even so, the message from Brugge is blunt: an offer on the scale of Arsenal’s summer move for Christos Tzolis would not be enough. The Gunners paid around £34million for the winger, a benchmark fee that still would not shift Brugge’s position on Seys.

They are not the only ones circling. Arsenal, Aston Villa and Newcastle have all been linked with the Belgium international, while Benfica and Porto are also watching closely. For now, they will all have to wait. With three years left on his contract, Brugge hold the cards.

Head coach Ivan Leko has previously admitted that serious money can turn heads at the club, but he also underlined the board’s ambition to push on rather than cash in.

“If there’s a lot of money on the table, it’s obviously not easy to say no. The board’s aim is still to build a team that’s even better than last season,” Leko said. “The right time to leave will come. Tzolis has proved that. Let’s hope they’re all still here in September.”

That last line now feels like a clear signal. Brugge want this group intact when the window shuts, Seys included.

For United, it is another dead end in a position that urgently needs clarity. Carrick’s options at left-back are thin. Luke Shaw is entering the final year of his contract, his long-term future unresolved, while Patrick Dorgu is increasingly being used higher up the pitch rather than as a traditional full-back.

Seys is the second left-back this summer to be effectively taken off the table for United, after Newcastle rebuffed their attempts to sign Lewis Hall. Each rejection tightens the time frame and narrows the field.

Attention could now turn more sharply towards Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas. The 19-year-old has a release clause in his deal, a crucial detail that makes him more attainable than Seys or Hall in a market where selling clubs are driving a hard bargain.

United still want a left-back before the window closes. The question now is whether they can find one willing — and allowed — to move, before the clock runs out.
