Manchester United Seeks Late-Window Solution for Left-Back and Centre-Back
Manchester United have torn into this summer window with intent, pouring around £150 million into a midfield rebuild. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, Carlos Baleba from Brighton. The spine looks stronger, the squad more balanced.
Yet with the deadline days away, Old Trafford still has a problem it cannot ignore.
Left-back hunt turns to short-term fix
Left-back has become the awkward gap in Michael Carrick’s plans. Luke Shaw is into the final year of his contract, his future unresolved. Patrick Dorgu, despite his versatility, is viewed more as a winger than a natural full-back.
The ideal targets have slipped out of reach. Prices, availability, timing – the usual late-August cocktail. That has forced United to shift strategy.
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, United are now actively exploring a loan for a left-back before the window shuts, echoing the move that brought Sergio Reguilon in from Tottenham on a temporary deal in 2023.
Romano, speaking on his YouTube show, suggested United are likely to pivot towards a reliable, experienced option rather than a marquee signing. Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde was considered, but the numbers involved were described as too expensive.
The logic is clear: find a proven defender who can step straight in, offer competition, and carry the kind of international profile that settles a back line under pressure. Not a headline act, but a dependable answer to a pressing question.
Time is running, and United need that answer quickly.
Chelsea’s Tosin offered, Acheampong admired
The search is not limited to the left flank. Centre-back has become another headache.
Injuries to Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt have stripped away depth in the heart of defence. With Harry Maguire the only fully reliable constant, United want one more body at the back before the window closes.
That is where Chelsea enter the story.
talkSPORT report that United have been offered the chance to sign Chelsea centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo and are also admirers of his team-mate Josh Acheampong. Tosin, 28, looks increasingly likely to leave Stamford Bridge this month. He was left out of Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Fulham, and his No. 4 shirt has already gone to new signing Valentin Barco – a clear signal of where he stands in the pecking order.
The former Manchester City academy product, who joined their youth ranks in 2003 and made his senior debut in 2016, never quite broke through at the Etihad. Eight first-team appearances were all he managed before a 2020 switch to Fulham, where he grew into a regular Premier League defender at Craven Cottage.
Now, he could be on the move again. Reports suggest Tosin may be available for around £20 million, a figure that would appeal to a club trying to plug multiple gaps in one window.
Acheampong, though, is a different case. The teenager is regarded as ‘untouchable’ at Chelsea, with the London club unwilling to entertain any offers. United’s interest has been noted, but for now it goes no further than admiration.
So United stand here: a rebuilt midfield, an injury-hit defence, a left-back conundrum and a late-window scramble involving Chelsea’s cast. With the clock ticking, the question is simple – can they find that “solution” in time, or will this be the hole that defines their season?
