Manchester United's Push to Retain JJ Gabriel Amid Chelsea Interest
Manchester United are ramping up efforts to keep highly-rated teenager JJ Gabriel out of Chelsea’s reach, as the club continues an aggressive summer rebuild on and off the pitch.
Fresh from sealing a return to the Champions League, United have already reinforced Michael Carrick’s midfield with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, and are still hunting a third midfielder, a left-back, a winger and potentially a new centre-forward. But inside Carrington, just as much energy is going into securing the club’s next generation.
United fight to keep JJ Gabriel
At the heart of that push is 15-year-old JJ Gabriel, a forward some at the club see as one of the brightest prospects in their academy.
Gabriel’s numbers at youth level are startling: 29 goals in 32 appearances for United’s U18s. Those figures have not gone unnoticed. According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea have emerged as the strongest external suitor, leading a pack that includes several Premier League and European heavyweights.
United, though, have moved to shut the door.
The club are described as “pushing for an agreement” over a new deal and are now “confident” they can tie Gabriel down once he becomes eligible to sign scholarship terms in October. That date is expected to trigger a flurry of interest around his future, and United want the groundwork done well before then.
The report stresses that the message from Old Trafford remains one of calm assurance, but behind the scenes there is a clear urgency: they are determined that Gabriel’s rapid rise continues in a red shirt, not anywhere else.
Striker search: Tresoldi on the radar
While they battle to keep one prolific young scorer, United are also exploring options for the first team.
Caught Offside report that the club have “stepped up their interest” in Club Brugge forward Nicolo Tresoldi, who has drawn attention across Europe. The 21-year-old is said to be “firmly on the radar” of Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham and Barcelona, with a fee in the region of €50m (around £43m) expected.
Barcelona are currently viewed as favourites after losing Robert Lewandowski and accelerating their move for Tresoldi, but the Spanish side may struggle to meet Brugge’s asking price. That financial tension could yet open the door for a Premier League bid.
Industry sources cited in the report suggest that Chelsea, United and Spurs are increasingly looking at Tresoldi as a realistic option up front in a market where prices for strikers have spiralled. His projected cost, thought to be around €45-50m, is being seen as relatively sensible in the current climate.
United’s summer, then, is being fought on two fronts: securing a proven goalscorer for Carrick’s senior squad, and locking down a 15-year-old who cannot stop scoring for the academy. How they handle both battles will say plenty about what kind of club they intend to be over the next decade.
