Manchester United Eye £43m Move for Edmond Tapsoba
Manchester United have been told exactly what it will take to prise Edmond Tapsoba away from Bayer Leverkusen – and it will not be cheap.
The Bundesliga champions are demanding around £43million for their captain, a fee they believe reflects both his importance to the side and the length of his contract, which runs until 2031. Leverkusen do not want to sell. But they have made it clear that a “suitable financial offer” will at least get them to the table.
United face Premier League battle
United are not alone in circling. Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are also in the hunt, with German outlet fussballdaten reporting that all three Premier League clubs are maintaining close contact with Tapsoba’s representatives over potential terms.
Tapsoba, 27, has been described in Germany as “tailor-made” for a side that wants to build from the back at high speed and defend big spaces – exactly the profile elite clubs crave in a modern central defender. His future is expected to come into sharper focus in the coming weeks as interest hardens into concrete decisions.
Leverkusen’s stance is understandable. Tapsoba is a cornerstone of Xabi Alonso’s defence and a leader in the dressing room, and last season he underlined his influence with five goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances. The Burkina Faso international only signed his new long-term deal earlier this year, a move that strengthened Leverkusen’s negotiating position and pushed his price firmly into the top bracket.
Even so, reports in Germany suggest the player’s openness to a new challenge has helped fuel the growing speculation. Newcastle, in particular, are said to view him as an immediate organiser and standard-setter at the back.
United’s shifting priorities
For United, Tapsoba is not a new name. The club were credited with interest in the defender in 2024, a summer that ultimately saw Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt arrive instead. That business appeared to close the door on another major centre-back signing in the short term.
This window, the focus has largely moved elsewhere. Michael Carrick and the recruitment team have concentrated on strengthening at left-back and in central midfield, with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos already through the door at Old Trafford to bolster the middle of the pitch.
Even so, United have not ruled out adding yet another midfielder before the deadline if the right opportunity appears. The same applies on the left flank, where they have pushed to improve the options but hit resistance.
Lewis Hall has been a prominent target, yet Newcastle have made their position clear: the defender is not for sale. A similar response has come from Club Brugge regarding Joaquin Seys, leaving United to reassess how aggressively they can reshape that side of the defence.
Carrick wants more
Carrick has not hidden his desire for further reinforcements before the window closes. Speaking about the business done so far, he struck a positive note but quickly turned to what still needs to be done.
“We've improved the group,” he said. “We've improved the squad in different ways. Balance, quality and the direction we want to go in.
“So the players that we've brought in, I think we've done really good business and we've got some top, top, top players. So we're delighted with that. We always want to improve.
“We want more, we need more. We keep looking forward to how we can do that. So that never stops. We're conscious of that and we've got to keep pushing.”
The question now is whether that push stretches to a £43m move for Edmond Tapsoba – and whether United are ready to fight off Newcastle and Tottenham to land a defender who would reshape the spine of their back line.
