Manchester United Confirm Departures of Sancho, Malacia, and Casemiro
Manchester United have drawn a sharp line under a turbulent era, confirming that Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro will all leave the club at the end of their contracts.
The announcement came with the publication of United’s retained list on Wednesday, a routine piece of housekeeping that carried unusually heavy symbolism. Three big bets. Three very different stories. All gone in one sweep.
Sancho exit closes a fraught chapter
Sancho’s departure feels the most charged. Signed amid huge fanfare from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for £73million, he arrived as the creative winger meant to light up Old Trafford’s right flank for a decade. It never truly caught fire.
He leaves having made just 83 appearances for United, his time in Manchester broken up by loan spells back at Dortmund, at Chelsea and most recently at Aston Villa, where he spent this past season. The flashes were there, but never with the consistency or authority that defined his Bundesliga rise.
Now 24 and a free agent, Sancho has been strongly linked with a permanent return to Dortmund, while Villa are also keen to keep him after his encouraging stint in the Midlands. United, who once built marketing campaigns around his name, now simply thank him and move on.
Malacia’s promise undone by injuries
Malacia’s story is quieter, but no less frustrating. Signed from Feyenoord in 2022, the Dutch full-back arrived at 26 with a reputation for tenacity and energy, a modern defender comfortable on the ball and aggressive without it.
He managed 50 appearances in red, often providing a lively alternative at left-back, but injuries repeatedly stalled his momentum. Just as he seemed ready to nail down a regular role, another setback would drag him back. In the end, his United career never escaped that stop-start rhythm.
He leaves as a player who never truly had the chance to show his full range in England, a reminder that not every misfire in recruitment is about talent or temperament. Sometimes bodies just don’t cooperate.
Casemiro bows out from Brazil duty
Then there is Casemiro, the seasoned heavyweight in this trio. His exit had already been confirmed earlier in the summer, but his name on the released list still carries weight.
The Brazilian midfielder arrived from Real Madrid as a serial winner and, for a time, played exactly like one. Across four seasons at Old Trafford, he made 160 appearances and scored 26 goals, offering bite, leadership and a sprinkling of big-game moments in a midfield that badly needed structure.
Now at the World Cup with Brazil, he steps away from United having given the club a measure of experience and authority during an unstable period. He may not have been a long-term solution, but he was rarely a bystander.
A clean break, and a clear message
United’s statement was brief and formal: “Everyone at the club would like to thank Casemiro, Tyrell and Jadon for their contributions to Manchester United and wish them the very best of luck for the future.”
Behind the polite farewell sits a blunt reality. Three high-profile investments, three sizeable wages off the books, and a squad edging away from some of the defining decisions of the last few years.
The rebuild at Old Trafford has been talked about for long enough. With Sancho, Malacia and Casemiro all walking through the exit door together, it now looks and feels very real.
