Manchester United’s season is barely out of first gear and already the managerial carousel is creaking into motion around Old Trafford.

According to reports in Italy, the club have identified Antonio Conte as their leading candidate should they decide to move on from Michael Carrick. Corriere della Sera claim the former Chelsea, Juventus, Inter and Napoli boss sits at the top of United’s shortlist if a change is made in the dugout.

The timing is no coincidence. Carrick’s side have stumbled out of the blocks in the Premier League, taking just four points from their opening four games. For a club that handed him the permanent job after he secured Champions League qualification for the 2026/27 campaign, the mood has darkened quickly.

Carrick’s rise was rapid. Installed as interim manager in January 2026, he steadied the ship, pushed United over the line into Europe’s elite competition and earned the job full-time at the end of last season. The summer was supposed to be about building on that platform.

Instead, the early weeks have brought questions.

Conte waits in the wings

Conte, meanwhile, is a looming presence on the market. The 57-year-old is currently out of work after leaving Napoli at the end of last season, and Italian outlets insist he is waiting for the “right project” before stepping back into club management.

Few coaches can match his domestic record. Ten major trophies. Three straight Serie A titles with Juventus in 2012, 2013 and 2014. A Premier League crown with Chelsea in 2016/17. A Scudetto with Inter Milan in 2021. Another Italian championship with Napoli in 2025. Wherever he goes, he tends to leave with silverware – and with a reputation for intensity that reshapes dressing rooms.

It is no surprise, then, that Corriere della Sera, via SportWitness and CalcioMercato, report Conte sits at the very top of United’s contingency plans if Carrick’s tenure unravels.

The tension writes itself: a club wrestling with a slow start, a serial winner on standby, a fanbase restless for a return to the top.

INEOS stance: faith, not panic

Yet inside Old Trafford, the message from the new powerbrokers is very different.

INEOS, the club’s co-owners, are not preparing the trapdoor. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, made their position clear: they remain “absolutely” convinced the future under Carrick will be “bright”.

The summer window offers a clue to their thinking. United pushed to add a left-back, Romano explained, but refused to sign for the sake of optics. No late scramble, no panic buy just to say business had been done. If the right option wasn’t there, they would wait.

That same logic is being applied to the manager.

Yes, four points from four league games is a disappointment. Everyone at the club knows it. But, Romano says, INEOS still maintain “total faith and confidence” in Carrick. They believe the work on the training ground will tell over the coming weeks, especially once the international break allows a reset.

Carrick, for his part, is not shrinking from the scrutiny. The bullish tone he strikes in public – insisting this team will “do very well” and that he remains “confident” in the squad – mirrors what he is telling the hierarchy behind closed doors. The message is consistent: stay calm, trust the process, the results will come.

Two paths, one decision

So United sit at a crossroads without yet choosing a turn.

On one side, the allure of Conte: proven, demanding, ready. On the other, a manager they promoted from within, who delivered Champions League football and still enjoys the backing of the owners despite a stuttering start.

The Italian reports will not go away if United’s league form continues to falter. Nor will the questions from a fanbase that has seen too many false dawns.

For now, though, Carrick keeps his seat, Conte waits, and the next few weeks of United’s season start to look like something far more than just a run of early fixtures.
