Manchester United Monitor Alejandro Balde's Transfer Situation
Manchester United are closely tracking Alejandro Balde’s situation at Barcelona after the Catalan club gave his agent, Jorge Mendes, the green light to find him a new destination.
The 22-year-old left-back’s future is moving quickly towards a breaking point. He was left out of the squad for Sunday night’s game against Elche at the Martinez Valero, a decision in Spain widely interpreted as the clearest sign yet that Barcelona are already working on his departure.
Balde, once seen as a long-term pillar on the left, is now a live topic in three major markets. His name is circulating in England, Portugal and Italy. According to Catalan newspaper Sport, Manchester United are the destination that excites him most.
That was not the plan a few months ago. All summer, Balde had insisted he wanted to stay and fight for his place. But the arrival and strong presence of Joao Cancelo has shifted the landscape. Direct competition with the Portuguese full-back has pushed Balde to rethink his stance and listen to Mendes’ proposals.
United's Need
United’s need at left-back is real, not theoretical. Luke Shaw is heading into the final year of his contract. Diogo Dalot has been pushed further forward, and both he and Noussair Mazraoui are natural right-backs being asked to cover the opposite flank. The Manchester Evening News reports that Balde is high on the list, but far from the only name under consideration.
He fits the profile: young, aggressive, comfortable in possession and used to playing under pressure. United have already opened lines of communication with Mendes to explore the conditions of a deal. At the same time, they are seriously weighing a much cheaper alternative.
Alternative Options
That alternative is Jorge Salinas, the 19-year-old Racing Santander left-back. His release clause sits at around £16 million, a fraction of what Barcelona are demanding for Balde. The difference in cost is stark, and it goes a long way to explaining United’s current stance: they are watching Balde closely, but have not yet put an official offer on the table.
So far, the only concrete bid Barcelona have received for Balde has come from Benfica, and Sport reports that proposal falls well short of the valuation set by the Catalan club. Aston Villa are viewed as the side most capable of matching Barcelona’s financial expectations, but they would first need to sell one of their own players to create room for the move.
Barcelona's Position
Barcelona’s position is delicate. They must free up financial margin, yet they are determined not to lose Balde for what they see as a bargain fee. Only a few months ago, the club internally valued him at around €40–45 million. Letting a 22-year-old Spain international go for significantly less would cut against that stance.
With the door now clearly ajar for his exit, Barcelona’s sporting department have already started looking for a new left-back. If Balde leaves, the left side would effectively fall to Cancelo and Gerard Martin, a thin rotation for a team expected to go deep on several fronts this season.
