Manchester City Sign Ayyoub Bouaddi for €100m
Manchester City have beaten Liverpool and a host of European rivals to the signing of 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi in a blockbuster deal with Lille.
The Premier League champions have agreed a package worth €100 million ($116.9m) for the teenager, paying an initial €95m ($111m) with a further €5m ($5.9m) in add-ons. The move positions Bouaddi as a key pillar of City’s midfield rebuild after the departure of Rodri and the sale of Bernardo Silva.
From World Cup breakout to €100m man
Bouaddi’s rise has been rapid and ruthless. He lit up this year’s World Cup with Morocco, catching the eye of scouts and pundits alike and instantly becoming one of the most talked-about young midfielders on the market.
Liverpool were among the clubs strongly linked earlier in the summer, with several sides tracking him closely after his performances on the biggest stage. City, though, have moved decisively and paid the premium Lille demanded.
The French club had hoped to keep him for at least one more season and stood firm on their valuation, only relenting once City committed to a nine-figure package.
The hype is not just built on potential. Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira, speaking on The Rest Is Football during the tournament, offered a glowing assessment.
“Really impressive — he’s only 18, but he plays like a 30-year-old,” Vieira said. “He’s got the tactical awareness, I think he’s always well-positioned. “He’s got the technical ability to play out from the back and a really strong personality. “I quite like the midfield three from Morocco, but of course, he’s the talent in this team.”
City clearly agree.
Maresca’s new midfield takes shape
Bouaddi arrives as the second major piece in a sweeping overhaul of City’s engine room. Elliot Anderson has already joined for a club-record £116 million ($158.2m), and the pair are expected to form the heart of Enzo Maresca’s new-look midfield.
The club has handed Bouaddi a five-year contract with an option for a further season, a clear statement that this is not a speculative punt on a youngster but a long-term cornerstone signing.
Rodri’s exit left a gaping hole at the base of midfield, while Bernardo Silva’s departure stripped City of craft and control in advanced areas. Bouaddi, with his blend of tactical intelligence, composure in build-up and presence without the ball, is being brought in to help bridge both gaps over time.
City’s recruitment team, though, are not stopping here.
City still hunting more midfield power
Tijjani Reijnders’ departure in the past week has only sharpened the club’s determination to keep reinforcing. City remain active going into the final hours of the window, intent on delivering Maresca the depth and quality he needs as he steps into the daunting role of succeeding Pep Guardiola.
High on their list is Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, though any deal would be complicated and costly. The London club are not expected to consider offers below around $130m, a figure that would test even City’s financial resolve.
Roma’s Manu Kone is also under consideration as the champions scour the market for at least one more midfielder to complete the rebuild.
For now, the headline belongs to Bouaddi. An 18-year-old who plays, as Vieira put it, like he’s been patrolling midfields for a decade. City have paid a giant’s fee to secure him.
Soon enough, the question will be whether he can carry a giant’s responsibility.
