Manchester City Demand £70 Million for Rodri Amid Barcelona Negotiations

Manchester City have drawn a hard line in the sand over Rodri – and Barcelona have just run straight into it.

According to The Times, City have told the Catalan club they want £70 million for their midfield anchor this summer. Not a penny less.

Barcelona thought they were close. Their latest proposal, an improved bid worth £51.3m plus £5m in add-ons, arrived with the clear intention of closing the deal for the 30-year-old. Inside the Camp Nou, there was a sense that this second offer should finally unlock negotiations.

City’s response was blunt. The offer was deemed “unacceptable”, the door slammed shut on those terms, and the message sent back was simple: pay the £70m valuation or walk away.

The rejection has shifted the tone of the saga. What looked like a deal edging towards completion now hangs in the balance. Barcelona must decide whether to push again with a third bid or bide their time and hope the player’s situation forces City’s hand later in the window.

Rodri’s importance to City is not in doubt. He has been central to their era of dominance, a cornerstone in midfield as they collected four Premier League titles and the 2022-23 Champions League. Taking him out of Pep Guardiola’s system is not a minor tweak; it is open-heart surgery.

Yet the clock is ticking on his contract. The Spain international has no intention of extending his current deal, which runs out in June next year. That reality gives City a dilemma: cash in now, or risk losing a key asset for significantly less – or nothing – down the line.

Behind the scenes, the champions are already working on a contingency plan. They have identified Enzo Fernandez as a potential replacement, but that chase comes with its own complications. Chelsea have put a £120m price tag on the Argentine and have made it clear they will only entertain offers that meet that figure, and only if they arrive before 5pm on Friday.

For City, that stance collides with their own recent spending. They have already broken their club record this summer, paying £116m to bring in Elliot Anderson. Matching Chelsea’s valuation for Fernandez on top of that would be a huge financial stretch, and the Manchester club are expected to try to negotiate the fee down rather than simply meet the demand.

So the market tightens. City want £70m for Rodri. Chelsea want £120m for Fernandez. Barcelona are stuck below City’s asking price. And the days on Rodri’s contract quietly fall away.
