Manchester United Make Last-Minute Move for Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde on Transfer Deadline Day
Manchester United are making a late push to sign Alejandro Balde, the left-back from Barcelona, as the summer transfer window is about to close. With Michael Carrick eager to strengthen the squad, the Red Devils are working hard to secure the Spain international's move to Old Trafford.
Defensive Reinforcements in Focus
Despite heavy spending this summer, including a £150m revamp of their midfield, Manchester United still see the left-back spot as a priority. The club has welcomed new midfield signings like Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba. Earlier in the window, they targeted Newcastle United's Lewis Hall, but with the Magpies refusing to sell, attention has turned elsewhere.
Talks with Jorge Mendes and Barcelona’s Position
The interest in Balde isn't brand new. Preliminary talks between Manchester United and his agent, Jorge Mendes, took place late in August. At first, it seemed Balde would stay at Barcelona to compete under coach Hansi Flick. Yet, his role has become uncertain since the season started.
Balde has not played any minutes this campaign, while 19-year-old Xabi Espart has started all three league games. Joao Cancelo’s return on a free transfer adds another strong option at full-back, squeezing Balde’s chances further.
Financial Challenges and Transfer Preferences
The main obstacle involves the type of deal and financial terms. Manchester United prefer a loan to fill their current needs, but Barcelona want a permanent sale to improve their finances. The Spanish side values Balde at around £34m and insists on a full transfer rather than a loan.
Alternatives Explored and Other Targets Dropped
While looking for other options, United decided against pursuing Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas despite his modest £13m release clause. Racing has already replaced Salinas by signing Aaron Martin from Genoa. Still, Manchester United remain focused on securing Balde.
