Man City vs Coventry: Enzo Fernandez's Expected Impact at Etihad

Enzo Fernandez reshapes the middle
All eyes fall on Fernandez. They have to. A British transfer record-equalling £125m does that to a player.
City did not sign him to ease him in gently. The expectation is simple: he starts. He becomes the reference point in midfield from day one. His arrival effectively ends Marc Guehi’s short-lived stint as an emergency holding midfielder. That experiment served its purpose, but with Fernandez available, City can restore a more natural structure in the centre of the pitch.
Elliot Anderson is the likeliest partner to slot in alongside him, offering legs, balance and a bit of industry around the Argentine’s passing range. With that pairing, City finally look like a side with a plan in the middle rather than a workaround.
The knock-on effect is immediate higher up the pitch. Rayan Cherki has opened the season sharply. Phil Foden is still one of the club’s crown jewels. Yet neither can feel secure. Those attacking midfield berths suddenly look crowded, and that is exactly the kind of tension City’s spending was designed to create.
Ndiaye, who arrived for up to £65m, may have to bide his time. Bouaddi, signed for £86m, also seems more likely to watch the opening whistle from the bench. When a club spends at this level, reputations alone no longer guarantee minutes.
Defence finally finding some shape
Behind them, the back line is starting to look like something Maresca can trust.
Abdukodir Khusanov is in line to continue on the right, offering a more settled option after the early-season tinkering. Ruben Dias and Guehi are expected to form the central pairing, a blend of leadership and athleticism that should give City a solid spine. On the left, Josko Gvardiol is set to keep his place and give the unit some continuity.
It matters. Coventry will arrive looking for chaos, for gaps, for any hint that this expensively assembled City side is still learning each other’s movements. A stable back four reduces those invitations.
Injuries and the likely XI
Not everything is under Maresca’s control. Matheus Nunes remains a fitness doubt, still not fully ready to shoulder the load in midfield. Jeremy Doku is out, his calf injury from the Community Shield clash with Arsenal keeping him sidelined.
