Man City Set to Test Chelsea's Resolve with Enzo Fernandez Bid
Manchester City are preparing an opening offer for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez as Enzo Maresca pushes hard for a marquee addition to his reshaped midfield.
The Argentina international has been placed at the top of Maresca’s wish list after a summer of upheaval at the Etihad. City have lost four major midfielders and, with the transfer deadline looming next week, the pressure to land a statement signing is growing.
Chelsea know exactly how highly City rate Fernandez. Earlier in the summer, the London club set an informal deadline for any deal and made it clear they would not even pick up the phone for less than £120m. That date came and went without agreement, but City have not walked away.
They are expected to come back again for the 25-year-old before the window shuts, in a move that would send shockwaves through the Premier League market.
If Chelsea do relent, Fernandez would become one of the most expensive players in Premier League history, slotting in just behind Liverpool’s £125m capture of Alexander Isak last summer. City themselves are already operating at the top end of the market in this window, having paid £116m to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. Breaking their transfer record twice in the same summer is now a very real possibility.
The pursuit is not just about money. Maresca and Fernandez have history. The City manager left Chelsea in controversial circumstances on New Year’s Day before taking the Etihad job in June, but he and Fernandez have maintained a positive relationship. That personal connection is understood to be a key factor in City’s confidence that a deal can be done.
Maresca’s need for midfield reinforcements is obvious. Tijjani Reijnders has gone to Al-Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia for £52m. Barcelona have taken Rodri for £65m. Newcastle have agreed a £52m fee for Nico Gonzalez. Bernardo Silva departed earlier in the summer and is now at Real Madrid. Four significant exits, one gaping hole in the heart of City’s side.
While City rebuild, Fernandez has been living through his own turbulence at Stamford Bridge.
Since Chelsea’s Champions League elimination by PSG in March, the mood around the World Cup winner has darkened. He and his agent, former Paris St-Germain midfielder Javier Pastore, explored interest from Real Madrid, only for the Spanish club to publicly deny any move for him. The noise never really died down, and Fernandez’s criticism of the club grew more pointed as the months passed.
New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso tried to steady the situation in July, revealing only that he had held a private conversation with Fernandez. The midfielder, signed from Benfica in 2023 for £107m, remains one of the most expensive players in Chelsea’s history, but Alonso declined to share what was said behind closed doors.
On the pitch, the tension is starting to spill into the stands. Fernandez came off the bench in Monday’s 3-2 win over Fulham and was loudly booed by sections of the home crowd, with the reaction linked to his role in England’s World Cup exit. At full-time he briefly celebrated with the away fans and his team-mates, then headed straight down the tunnel, the first Chelsea player to disappear from view.
