Lucas Herrington Completes Record Transfer to Hull City
Colorado Rapids defender Lucas Herrington has completed a club-record move to Premier League side Hull City, sealing one of the most eye-catching transfers in MLS history for a defender.
The 18-year-old Australian international leaves Colorado for a fee reportedly rising to $23 million, with a $17 million base and a sell-on clause included. No Rapids defender has ever commanded more. No defender in MLS has, either.
“Lucas is a special talent whose elite mentality and character match his outstanding ability on the field,” said Rapids president Pádraig Smith, who made no attempt to hide the club’s pride in both the player and the deal.
He framed Herrington as the blueprint for what Colorado want to be: a club that identifies, recruits, and develops top young talent, then launches them onto the biggest stages.
Herrington’s story in Colorado barely lasted a year. It moved fast.
The Rapids picked him up from A-League side Brisbane Roar FC on a pre-contract in August 2025, reportedly for under $1 million. A smart punt on a teenager from Brisbane. By January, he had landed in Colorado, leaving Australia for the first time to chase a career-defining opportunity.
From there, his rise was almost vertical. The young center back forced his way into the Rapids XI, earned a 2026 MLS All-Star nod, and then stepped onto the global stage with the Socceroos, playing twice at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This season, he logged 20 games for Colorado, contributing 1 goal and 1 assist while anchoring their back line.
“When I landed in Colorado in January, I had left Australia for the first time to come across the world and chase a dream. The Rapids and their fans took a chance on me and made me feel at home from day one,” Herrington said, paying tribute to the club, head coach Matt Wells, Smith, and his teammates.
He reserved a special line for the supporters, thanking them for embracing “a kid from Brisbane” as one of their own and insisting he will “always be proud to have been a Rapid.”
Now, the next chapter takes him to England.

Hull City, back in the Premier League for the first time since the 2016-17 season after winning the 2025-26 EFL Championship playoff final against Middlesbrough, have chosen Herrington as a cornerstone signing for their return to the top flight.
For a promoted club, investing heavily in an 18-year-old center back is a bold statement. Hull are betting that the composure, physicality, and mentality Herrington showed in MLS and on the World Cup stage will translate quickly to the demands of the Premier League.
Colorado, meanwhile, lose a key defender in the middle of a delicate season.

This is the first campaign under head coach Matt Wells, the former Tottenham Hotspur assistant tasked with reshaping the Rapids. His side sit 11th in the Western Conference, two points off the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs line on 22 points. Every defensive lapse matters. Every absence is felt.
Herrington’s exit leaves a significant hole in the back line and a sizeable windfall in the front office. Smith has been clear that developing and selling talent is central to the Rapids’ identity. Now comes the hard part: turning record income into on-field stability without losing ground in a tight playoff race.
Colorado have proved they can find a gem for under $1 million and sell him for a record fee inside a year.
