Lucas Herrington Shines in Premier League Debut
Lucas Herrington’s Premier League debut lasted barely half an hour, but it felt like a statement.
The 18-year-old Australian defender stepped off the Hull City bench with his side 2-0 up on Manchester United and a stadium braced for the inevitable siege. Instead, the teenager helped slam the door shut.
Hull stun United, Herrington steps in
Promoted Hull, tipped by many to go straight back down and even dismissed by Joe Cole with the throwaway line “Hull are gone, man,” ripped up the script with a 2-0 win over a sluggish United at the MKM Stadium — their first league victory over the giants in 52 years.
By the time Herrington was called, the damage to Michael Carrick’s side was already done. Hull had bullied United at set pieces, exposed their lethargic build-up, and earned every decibel of the noise pouring down from the stands.
Semi Ajayi struck first in the 17th minute, United failing to clear a corner as the centre-back pounced to put Hull ahead. United never really recovered from that early jolt. They shuffled the ball, but rarely the defence in front of them.
The pressure told again in the 38th minute. Regan Slater whipped in a vicious free kick, and Nobel Mendy — the central defender signed on the same day as Herrington and preferred from the start — timed his run perfectly to nod home Hull’s second. As he wheeled away, the chant rolled around the ground: “Are you watching, Joe Cole?!”
United had no real answer. Their attacking play lacked tempo, their final ball even more so. Hull, written off before a ball was kicked this season, looked sharper, hungrier, and far better drilled.
A calm debut on a chaotic night
Then came Herrington’s moment.
When Mendy limped off injured in the 64th minute, Bosnian manager Sergej Jakirovic turned to the teenager who has already made history as Australia’s most expensive teenager. The former Colorado Rapids defender entered as part of a triple substitution, tasked with helping preserve a famous win rather than merely soaking up late minutes in a lost cause.
He did not look like a kid thrown into chaos. He looked like he belonged.
Herrington became the first Australian teenager to play in the Premier League since Harry Kewell and, at 18 years and 351 days, the third youngest Aussie ever to feature in England’s top flight. It did not faze him. Not the opposition. Not the occasion. Not the responsibility.
Nine touches. That was all he had as United huffed and puffed in front of him. But every intervention was clean, every decision measured. He held his position, read danger early, and never once appeared rushed as United tried to force a way back with a series of heavy-legged, predictable attacks.
Hull’s back line, with an 18-year-old at its heart for the closing stages, simply refused to budge.
A door opens for the Aussie teen
Jakirovic later confirmed that Ajayi, Mendy and captain Lewie Coyle will all need assessment over the next 24 hours after picking up knocks. It could push Herrington straight back into the spotlight.
He is in line to feature again in Tuesday’s League Cup tie away to Championship side Stoke City. After that comes another test of nerve and ambition: a league trip to fellow promoted side Coventry City, who opened their campaign with a 3-0 defeat at champions Arsenal.
For Hull, this was more than an upset. It was a roar of intent on their Premier League return after nine years away, capped by delirious celebrations from the home fans and flamboyant owner Acun Ilicali as Status Quo’s “Rocking All Over the World” blasted out.
For Carrick and United, it was a grim opening chapter: a first ever Premier League loss to Hull, and a performance that exposed a worrying lack of spark.
For Lucas Herrington, it was something else entirely — the night an 18-year-old from Queensland walked into one of the game’s biggest stages, and walked out looking like he plans to stay.
