Liverpool in Talks with Valencia for Harvey Elliott Loan Move
Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott as the transfer window ticks towards Tuesday night’s deadline.
The 23-year-old has attracted interest from a number of clubs over the summer, but it is the La Liga side who have moved to the front of the queue ahead of the 11pm cut-off on September 1.
Elliott is understood to have already spoken with Valencia head coach Carlos Corberan about his prospective role at Mestalla. The proposed deal is a straight loan, but it could also pave the way for Liverpool to extend his contract to protect the value of the former England Under-21 international, whose current terms run until the summer of 2028.
Right now, he finds himself on the outside looking in at Anfield. Elliott has yet to make a match-day squad under new head coach Andoni Iraola, a stark contrast to the excitement that surrounded his return from Aston Villa at the end of last season.
His year at Villa Park never really caught fire. Elliott barely featured, and while Villa’s campaign ended in Europa League glory, he remained on the fringes, with the club carefully managing his game time. Villa were determined not to let him hit the 10-appearance trigger that would have activated a £35m obligation to buy, and his minutes reflected that caution.
The previous campaign had already boxed him in. A late substitute appearance in Liverpool’s dramatic 3-2 win at Newcastle 12 months ago meant he could not secure another move in the January window, leaving him stuck in a role that never truly developed.
Back at Liverpool in pre-season, Elliott cut an honest, slightly uncertain figure. Speaking in New York after a 1-0 win over Wrexham on July 30, he admitted he was wrestling with his next step.
“I think I need to be more kind of cautious of my decisions," he said. “Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, within that aspect of doing what's right for me, and whether I'm staying here and fighting for my place, or whether that's potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at this moment in time until I get some more intel."
Liverpool, aware of Valencia’s admiration, had been expecting contact before the weekend. That interest has now turned into direct negotiations over a loan, with all parties weighing up what the move would mean for Elliott’s development and Liverpool’s long-term plans.
Elliott joined his boyhood club from Fulham in the summer of 2019 and has already racked up 149 appearances for the Reds. The next one might yet come in a different shade of red, under the Spanish sun, with his Anfield future hanging on what happens before the window slams shut.
