Liverpool’s Transfer Window: Elliott Nears Valencia Move

Liverpool’s transfer window is starting to look like a high‑wire act. And now two more big names could be about to step off the Anfield stage.

Elliott closes in on Valencia switch

Harvey Elliott, once talked up as a key part of Liverpool’s future, is moving closer to a fresh start in Spain.

After a flat loan spell at Aston Villa last season, the 21-year-old has slipped down the pecking order under Andoni Iraola. With minutes looking scarce and Liverpool’s squad already stretched, a temporary exit is gathering pace.

Spanish journalist Matteo Moretto first revealed that Valencia are closing in on Elliott, reporting “optimism between the parties” and stressing that talks between the clubs are “very advanced” for a loan move. Crucially, Elliott has already spoken directly with Iraola and, according to Moretto, has asked to join the La Liga side.

The pressure around the deal ramped up again when Fabrizio Romano weighed in. Romano says Elliott has now agreed personal terms with Valencia after “positive talks”, with negotiations ongoing between the clubs to finalise the move.

Valencia have made an official approach and are trying to beat two other proposals on the table for the midfielder. The structure is clear: a loan, details still to be thrashed out between Anfield and Mestalla.

If it goes through, Elliott will swap a peripheral role at Liverpool for a club where he would be expected to shoulder far more responsibility in a top European league.

Barcola in, exits mounting

All this comes in a window that has already tested Liverpool’s resolve.

The club have finally landed long-term target Bradley Barcola from PSG, agreeing a £100m deal plus add-ons for the highly rated winger. He becomes the fourth major arrival of the summer after Ronald Araujo, Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz.

It should feel like a statement. Instead, there’s a nagging sense of imbalance.

Liverpool still look light in several areas, with strong arguments that they need another forward, another midfielder and cover at right-back before the window shuts next week. Iraola is working with a small group and, as Elliott’s situation shows, the departures are not finished yet.

Man City push for Gakpo

Elliott might not be the only Liverpool attacker heading for the exit.

Cody Gakpo has emerged as a serious target for Manchester City, who are scrambling to reinforce their front line after losing Savinho and Omar Marmoush to Tottenham.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider that City are “pushing to agree a deal” for the Dutch forward and that Gakpo has become their “top target” in attack. The move would raise eyebrows across the league, not least because Gakpo has also been a long-term target for Tottenham, who have shown the most concrete interest in him this summer.

City’s interest underlines how highly Gakpo is rated at the top end of the Premier League. For Liverpool, losing him in the same window they are still scrambling for attacking depth would be a major call.

Barcola’s arrival offers some insurance. But if Elliott heads to Valencia and City succeed in prising Gakpo away, Liverpool’s late-window juggling act turns into something else entirely: a race against time to make sure this season doesn’t hinge on what they failed to do in August.
