Liverpool's Transfer Window Challenges Amid Orozco Departure
Liverpool’s transfer window is shrinking fast, and the to-do list is still far too long.
What was supposed to be a summer of bold rebuilding now feels like a scramble. Talk of five or six signings has cooled into a far more modest reality, and with Mohamed Salah’s future unresolved, there is a growing sense that Liverpool might struggle even to replace their talisman, never mind deepen the squad around him.
Names from the first-team group continue to be linked with exits. Stefan Bajcetic has been mentioned among those who could be moved on. Cody Gakpo is the headline figure attracting attention, but that idea only lives on paper for now. Unless sporting director Richard Hughes lands at least a couple of forwards, Liverpool simply cannot afford to let the Dutchman walk out of Anfield.
The clock is ticking. Less than a week remains in the window. For Liverpool, it feels like now or never on several fronts.
Orozco slips away to Brighton
While the senior squad dominates the conversation, Liverpool have quietly pushed hard on the academy front in recent seasons. Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha are the poster boys for that strategy, plucked from other academies and already nudging their way towards first-team opportunities.
Anfield’s academy has long carried a reputation as one of the elite pathways in world football, a place where youngsters can realistically dream of breaking into the senior side. That conveyor belt has not always run smoothly in recent years, particularly under Arne Slot, but the arrival of Andoni Iraola has raised expectations that youth will again have a clear route to the top.
Which is why this one will sting.
One of the brightest talents on Liverpool’s radar is heading elsewhere. Matías Orozco, the 18-year-old Colombian midfielder they had been working on for some time, is set to join Brighton instead.
“Matías Orozco (18) will be a new player for #Brighton. The deal closes for 4.8M$ + bonuses for 85% with Cali,” journalist Pipe Sierra reported on X. “The Colombian will travel tonight to Europe with his agent Leonardo Daza to complete the visa process, medical exams, and contract signing.”
For Liverpool, a planned building block for the future has just been removed from the board.
Academy plan needs a new target
Last season underlined how serious Liverpool are about strengthening the youth ranks. Mor Talla Ndiaye, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Samuel Martinez all arrived as part of a concerted push to stock the academy with high-upside talent.
Of that trio, Ndukwe has emerged as the standout. Liverpool, though, have been left frustrated. He failed to accumulate enough points to secure a UK work permit, forcing the club to send him on loan to Levante. The hope is simple: gain senior minutes, build his profile, and return to Anfield in January better placed to be registered.
Orozco was expected to be the next piece in that puzzle. Talks had been ongoing, and for much of the summer Liverpool were effectively alone in the race. Then Brighton stepped in. Now the midfielder is on his way to the south coast instead of Merseyside.
The consequence is clear. Liverpool must pivot quickly, identify another player of similar potential, and fill the gap in their academy planning.
With the senior squad still in need of reinforcements and the youth setup missing a key target, the pressure on Hughes and the recruitment team only intensifies. The window is closing, the margins are shrinking, and Liverpool cannot afford many more near-misses if they want their academy to remain one of the standard-bearers in England.
