Liverpool’s summer of unease is edging towards its first defining moment.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool are “continuing their talks” with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola and expects the club to “accelerate” the move in the coming days. After weeks of slow-motion negotiations, the deal that has hovered over their window now looks closer than ever.
Hughes on the way out, questions piling up
All of this unfolds as Richard Hughes prepares to walk out of Anfield. The sporting director is closing in on a move to Al Hilal, and his time on Merseyside, brief but chaotic, is fizzling out under a cloud of uncertainty.
His spell has been anything but dull. Liverpool went from basking in another Premier League title to stumbling through messy transfer windows, watching marquee targets reject them in public.
In Hughes’ first summer it was Martin Zubimendi who slipped away. In his third, Yan Diomande. His second window brought more joy, with several key signings finally landing. The issue now is brutal and simple: too many of those recruits have yet to justify the money or the faith.
Supporters have felt that disconnect growing. A sporting director is supposed to bring clarity, structure, a clear line from plan to pitch. You want someone who knows the profile they’re chasing, who has backups ready, who always seems half a step ahead of the market.
Lately, Liverpool have looked the opposite.
A window that feels directionless
At times this summer, their recruitment has resembled a blindfolded dart throw. Names emerge, talks are reported, momentum builds, then stalls. The pattern has bred anxiety rather than excitement.
The Premier League season is only hours away, yet the squad still feels unfinished. Holes remain across the pitch. Most pressing of all, Andoni Iraola still doesn’t have the full set of players he needs to properly imprint his style of football.
This is not the summer Liverpool imagined when the title celebrations were still echoing around Anfield. Something has to give, and fast.
Instead, they are still locked in a stand-off over Barcola. The pursuit has dragged on for weeks, possibly months, with no final agreement. It now resembles a staring contest with PSG: who blinks first?
That is a dangerous way to operate when the squad is already short on depth.
Even if Barcola does arrive, he will not fix everything. Liverpool still need another winger capable of operating on the right, especially after the seismic departure of Mohamed Salah. That void is not easily patched over.
Ibrahim Mbaye has been floated as one potential solution, but senior Liverpool figures have cooled that talk, insisting nothing concrete is in motion. For now, it is interest, not a live negotiation.
So the problem remains, stark and urgent: Liverpool need reinforcements, they need them quickly, and the pool of realistic options is shrinking by the day.
Barcola talks set to “accelerate”
Against that backdrop, Romano’s update offers at least a hint of direction. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he confirmed Liverpool are still in discussions with PSG over Barcola and expects the club to push harder to get the deal done in the coming days.
After such prolonged haggling, that kind of language points to an endgame. The expectation now is that Liverpool are edging towards an agreement for the highly rated French winger.
If they finally land him, it will be a statement move in a window that has so far felt disjointed and reactive. The question is whether it comes in time for Iraola to mould this squad into his image – and whether Barcola is the first piece of a late surge, or the only one.
