Liverpool Set to Secure Contract for Untouchable Rio Ngumoha
Liverpool are closing in on a new contract for Rio Ngumoha and, this time, there is no sense of panic around Anfield.
The club now “fully expect” to reach an agreement with the teenager over an improved deal, according to TEAMtalk, a move that underlines just how central he has become to Liverpool’s plans after a difficult season.
Ngumoha was one of the few players to emerge with credit from last year’s campaign. While Liverpool laboured, the young winger injected pace, courage and end product, often looking like the one player capable of jolting the team awake. Many inside and outside the club felt he merited more minutes, especially with Cody Gakpo struggling to impose himself.
That form drew serious outside interest. Bayern Munich explored a move earlier in the summer and were linked with a shock swoop, sensing an opportunity around a frustrated young star. Liverpool pushed back hard. Bayern have since moved on to other targets, but the episode sharpened minds on Merseyside.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano summed up the club’s stance this week, describing Ngumoha as “untouchable” in Liverpool’s internal discussions.
“Should anything happen, Barcola or not Barcola, two wingers – because Liverpool’s intention is to add two wingers to the squad, especially if Gakpo goes to Tottenham – in any case, Rio Ngumoha is untouchable,” Romano said. “Rio Ngumoha was never close to joining Bayern this summer. Rio, for Liverpool, is an absolutely crucial part of their present and future project.”
That thinking now appears to be turning into a concrete contract.
Big rise on the table for Liverpool’s breakout star
TEAMtalk report that Liverpool are ready to “fully agree” an upgraded deal with Ngumoha, rewarding his rapid rise with a significant pay increase and stronger long-term security.
When he first arrived, Liverpool could only hand him the maximum three-year contract permitted for a teenager. That has quickly become outdated. The new agreement, as understood by TEAMtalk, would bring a major wage hike and performance-related bonuses, including clauses linked to international appearances as the club prepare for him to cement a place at senior level.
Crucially, the report adds that Liverpool “no longer fear” losing Ngumoha to a European heavyweight in the short term. The Bayern scare has faded. The message now is that the winger is central to the rebuild, not a saleable asset.
Gakpo edges towards Tottenham exit
While Ngumoha’s future looks increasingly tied to Anfield, Gakpo’s appears to be heading in the opposite direction.
A separate TEAMtalk report states that the Dutch forward has informed Liverpool he “wants” to join Tottenham Hotspur. His representatives are said to have already agreed personal terms in principle with Spurs and have now spoken directly with Liverpool’s hierarchy to make his position clear.
According to the report, Gakpo has told the club he does not see his long-term future at Anfield and wants the chance to relaunch his career in north London.
For Liverpool, that potential departure only sharpens the importance of the Ngumoha deal. With plans already in place to recruit two wingers and the prospect of Gakpo heading to Tottenham, tying down their brightest wide talent is no longer just smart business. It looks like the foundation of the next attacking era.
