Liverpool's Pursuit of Ismaïla Sarr Hits a Wall
Liverpool’s hunt for a new right-winger has hit another wall, this time at Selhurst Park.
The club sounded out Crystal Palace over Ismaïla Sarr as they work against the clock to reinforce the right side of their attack before the transfer window closes. Reports from Fabrizio Romano claimed the Reds went as far as lodging a €58.4 million bid for the winger, though the Athletic countered that no formal offer ever landed on Palace’s desk.
What is clear is the outcome: Liverpool asked about Sarr. Palace’s response was blunt. Their star is not for sale.
Palace hold firm
Galatasaray had already tested Palace’s resolve earlier in the summer, seeing two offers rejected for the Senegal international. The Turkish champions are not expected to come back with a third proposal, and Palace’s stance has only hardened after Sarr’s role in their European success.
Andoni Iraola’s side had initially looked elsewhere. Yankuba Minteh was high on their list, but that pursuit collapsed under the weight of Brighton’s demands. The Seagulls were said to be asking for around €90 million, a figure that shut down Liverpool’s interest and pushed Sarr to the forefront of their plans.
Salah succession proving a maze
Liverpool’s search for a long-term successor to Mohamed Salah has turned into one of the window’s most complicated subplots. A string of right-wingers have been monitored, discussed, or approached. Minteh was one. PSG’s Ibrahim Mbaye has been heavily debated internally. Now Sarr has joined that group of targets who, for one reason or another, remain out of reach.
The appeal is obvious. At 28, Sarr brings proven Premier League pedigree, with 116 top-flight appearances behind him. He was a standout performer in Palace’s Europa Conference League triumph, scoring 21 goals for the Eagles across the campaign and underlining why clubs of Liverpool’s stature were always likely to circle this summer.
Palace, though, see him as central to their project. That leaves Liverpool back at the drawing board.
Barcola talks add another twist
While right-wing remains the priority slot, Liverpool are also active on the opposite flank. Talks are ongoing with PSG over Bradley Barcola, with the France international preferring to operate from the left.
So the picture is messy. One eye on Barcola. Another on the shrinking pool of right-sided options. Palace shutting the door on Sarr. Brighton pricing Minteh out of reach.
Liverpool know the window is closing fast. The question now is simple: where do they turn next in the search for life after Salah?
