Liverpool Pursues Bradley Barcola Amid Midfield Concerns
Liverpool’s summer rebuild has a clear headline act in mind – and Fabrizio Romano is convinced it’s still Bradley Barcola.
The transfer specialist has nailed his colours to the mast over the Paris Saint-Germain winger, insisting the deal is very much alive despite claims that Liverpool had pressed pause on talks.
Barcola, under contract at PSG until 2028 and reported to be resisting an extension, has emerged as a leading candidate to help fill the attacking void left by Mohamed Salah’s departure. After bringing in Ronald Araujo, Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz, Liverpool’s focus has swung firmly to the flanks, and Barcola is at the top of the list.
PSG’s stance is brutal: they want around £145m. Liverpool, as ever, are looking for a compromise somewhere below that figure. A report on Friday suggested negotiations had been halted for two separate reasons, hinting at a cooling of interest.
Romano isn’t buying that.
On his YouTube channel, he underlined that Liverpool are “still trying for Barcola” and said he is “absolutely all in” on the transfer happening, tying the winger’s future to recent moves in Paris.
“What does it (the Torres and Godts arrivals) mean? That there is an expectation there could be movements around the situation of Bradley Barcola,” Romano said, pointing to PSG’s business as a potential trigger.
From his perspective, the Liverpool-Barcola link has never gone away.
“Because the situation of Barcola remains absolutely linked to Liverpool. I never stopped telling you and I remain absolutely all in on this story, because Liverpool want Barcola.
“Liverpool are negotiating for Barcola, and because I was believing in this news already in April, May, when the story and the narrative around was that Barcola was untouchable. But I remain on this story again today.”
The message is blunt: talks are ongoing, even if the numbers don’t yet match.
“Liverpool are still trying for Barcola. There’s still a gap in financial valuation between what PSG want and what Liverpool offer, but they’re still working for Barcola.
The financial agreement with the player is okay, and now Liverpool and PSG keep talking, exchanging messages and discussing for Barcola.
The deal is alive.
So while the clubs wrestle over a fee, the player’s side appears settled. Barcola is described as keen on the move, Liverpool are happy with personal terms, and the stalemate sits squarely between Anfield and the Parc des Princes boardrooms.
Carragher sounds alarm over Liverpool midfield
While the recruitment team chase a marquee winger, one of Liverpool’s greatest modern defenders is staring at another part of the pitch and doesn’t like what he sees.
For Jamie Carragher, the real storm is brewing in midfield.
“The midfield for me is still a huge problem for Liverpool,” he said on The Overlap Fan Debate, cutting through the transfer excitement with a blunt assessment.
Carragher has dipped into pre-season, focusing on the more revealing tests.
“I haven’t watched all the pre-season games, but I watched the last two against decent opposition – it was Leeds and then Monaco.
“And the problem Liverpool had last season was there was space everywhere in midfield. That has not gone away at all.”
The concern isn’t abstract. It’s tactical, and it’s growing.
He believes the way Dominik Szoboszlai is being used could stretch Liverpool even further.
“That’s only going to get bigger with the deployment of [Dominik] Szoboszlai in midfield.
“It looks like they’re going to play him, rather than as a number 10, almost as a central midfield player alongside [Ryan] Gravenberch and that is just pure box-to-box.”
In other words, energy without enough control. Runners without a true anchor. For a side trying to bed in a new attacking structure and possibly a record winger, it’s a sharp warning.
Liverpool’s hierarchy are pushing hard to land Barcola. The numbers are huge, the belief from Romano is unwavering, and the player is ready. But as the new season looms, the bigger question hangs over Anfield: will a blockbuster winger matter if the heart of the team is still wide open?
