Liverpool's Midfield Search: Lamine Camara Emerges as Key Target

Liverpool’s midfield search rumbles on – and a new name is moving up the list.

According to a well-placed source on X (formerly Twitter), the club are still active in the market for a midfielder this summer and hold a strong interest in Monaco’s Lamine Camara. All this while they close in on a blockbuster £120m package for PSG forward Bradley Barcola.

So the question hangs over Anfield: is there room – and budget – for both?

Midfield need won’t go away

Liverpool’s title-winning midfield of 2024/25 carried real bite going forward. Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch drove the team on, flooded the final third and helped power the Reds to the top.

They also left a scar.

The 2-2 draw with Newcastle at the weekend underlined the problem. When the game opened up, Liverpool’s midfield looked stretched and exposed, the balance tilting too far towards attack and not enough towards control.

That’s why the search hasn’t stopped. There’s a strong case that a new midfielder is every bit as urgent as bolstering the forward line. The club want to strengthen in attack, but they know another season of leaving the middle of the pitch unprotected is a risk.

The dilemma is obvious: can they fix the midfield without leaving Andoni Iraola short of forwards?

Lamine Camara: the profile Liverpool lack?

If Liverpool decide they need a natural defensive presence, Camara fits the brief.

The Monaco midfielder, 22, has built a reputation in Ligue 1 as a ball-winner who doesn’t just destroy play, he shapes it. His numbers from the 2025/26 campaign paint the picture of a player who lives in the thick of the action:

The twist is that he’s not just a destroyer.

Those are the numbers of a midfielder who wants the ball, keeps it, and does damage with it. He can win possession, then immediately turn it into an attacking moment – exactly the kind of dual-threat profile that has thrived at Anfield in recent years.

It’s the sort of option that makes recruitment departments sit up. A player who can plug the defensive gap without blunting the team’s attacking rhythm.

The price of balance

There is, of course, a cost.

Monaco have already turned down a £35m offer from Crystal Palace, according to the BBC. Other reports suggest the French side value Camara in the £42.8m–£51.4m range.

Liverpool, for their part, are understood to be planning a maximum of two more signings this summer. One of those slots is effectively reserved for Barcola. That leaves a single major move to play with.

Spend it on a forward and Iraola walks into the season with a full armoury up front. Use it on a midfielder like Camara and Liverpool might finally fix the structural flaw that keeps reappearing in big games.

That’s the calculation facing the club now: trust the current midfield to hold, or pay Monaco’s price to reshape the heart of the team for the battles to come.
