Romano: Mac Allister “didn’t want to leave”
Romano has made it clear that any exit is far from straightforward. Mac Allister, he says, is not pushing for the door.
“What he says in public is the reality,” Romano told Caught Offside. “He loves Liverpool as a club, as a fan base, his teammates – so he's very happy there. He didn't want to leave.”
That stance matters. In the summer, a big move could have materialised, but Mac Allister’s affection for Liverpool helped shut that conversation down. He stayed. He wanted to stay.
The tension has only sharpened since the midfielder publicly admitted he has not received a new contract offer, even as Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai secured fresh terms. The contrast is stark and has fuelled the belief that Mac Allister is the one Liverpool are prepared to move on to clear space for someone like Camara, a plan recently hinted at again by David Ornstein.
Mac Allister, for his part, has been anything but quiet about his ambitions. He wants a new deal. He believes he has earned it.

Mac Allister has started the season impressively, anchoring the midfield and delivering big moments – none bigger than his brilliant winner against Atlético Madrid, a strike that underlined his importance and his quality in one swing of his right boot.
Performances like that make the club’s internal debate far more awkward. Offloading a struggling player is one thing. Selling a key starter who is playing well, contributing consistently, and publicly declaring his love for the club is something else entirely.
Liverpool now stare at a decision that could shape the next phase of their midfield: stick with a player who wants to be part of the project and is proving his worth, or press ahead with a plan that seems to revolve around his departure and the arrival of a new face.
For the moment, the strategy appears clear on paper – sell Mac Allister, bring in a new midfielder, solve the numbers. But with the Argentine thriving and refusing to agitate for a move, Liverpool may find that the neat solution they drew up is the one they can no longer afford to follow.
