Liverpool's Late Transfer Window Pursuit of Lamine Camara
Liverpool have been offered the chance to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara in the final days of the transfer window – and he might not be the only Senegal international heading for Anfield.
The approach, reported by Ben Jacobs, drops another name onto an increasingly busy late-window shortlist for the Reds, who are scrambling to add depth before the September 1 deadline.
Quiet window, growing urgency
For a club of Liverpool’s size, this has been a low-key summer so far. Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz have arrived on permanent deals, while Ronald Araujo has joined on loan from Barcelona to bolster the defence.
The headline move is close: an agreement is now in place with PSG for winger Bradley Barcola after a chase that has dragged through the summer. But Andoni Iraola still wants more.
Speaking before Liverpool’s clash with Nottingham Forest, the head coach made it clear that the club are trying to move.
“The word is ‘ideally’, ideally is the magic word,” Iraola said when asked if there were other areas he would like to strengthen.
“In the end, there are certain things that you can do, certain things that we don’t know if we can do. But it’s true that the priority has been to strengthen in the wide areas.
“Still, we have four, five days, I’m sure if we can improve other areas, we will.”
The message was unmistakable: Liverpool are active, and the final stretch of the window will not be quiet.
Camara on the table as Monaco prepare to sell
Into that context drops Camara. According to Jacobs, Monaco have offered the midfielder to both Liverpool and Chelsea as a late-window opportunity, with Crystal Palace having already seen a bid rejected earlier this month.
The need for a central option is clear. Curtis Jones has been sold to Inter Milan, leaving a gap in midfield even as Liverpool try to accelerate the development of highly rated youngster Trey Nyoni.
Monaco, meanwhile, are already planning their own reshuffle. Journalist Luca Bendoni reports that the Ligue 1 club have reached an agreement in principle with Cruz Azul for midfielder Erik Lira in a deal worth around €10m including add-ons. The move depends on Monaco completing the sale of a non-EU player – a category that could include Camara.
That opens the door for Liverpool if they choose to walk through it.
Double Senegal swoop still alive
Camara is not the only Senegalese name in the frame.
Senegalese journalist La Loumance has suggested Liverpool could yet bring in both Camara and his international teammate Ismaila Sarr before the window shuts, hinting that the Premier League side’s late business could have a distinctly Senegalese flavour.
Sarr remains a live story. The Independent’s Miguel Delaney reported on Thursday that Liverpool are still pursuing a deal for the Crystal Palace attacker, even after new Eagles boss Pierre Sage insisted the player is not for sale.
Reports initially claimed Liverpool had seen a bid of around £50m turned down. That figure has since been challenged. TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey has been told that Liverpool did not, in fact, lodge a formal offer for the 28-year-old.
What they have done is make an enquiry. The push, for now, appears to be coming from Sarr’s camp, who have offered the winger to Liverpool in the hope of turning that enquiry into a concrete bid.
The dynamic is clear: Liverpool are interested, Sarr’s side are keen, Palace are holding firm. Something has to give, or the clock will run out.
Anfield braced for a frantic finish
All of it points to a frantic finale to the window for Liverpool’s recruitment team. Wide players remain the priority, but a late midfield signing is firmly on the radar.
A trusted source has indicated that any final midfield move is likely to focus on a player Iraola knows well – a detail that only sharpens the intrigue around Camara and any other familiar faces who might suddenly come into play.
