Liverpool’s defensive rebuild may not be done raiding Barcelona yet.
With the summer window entering its chaotic final stretch, opportunities are appearing that simply didn’t exist a few weeks ago. Liverpool knows that better than most. Ronald Araujo is already through the door at Anfield, a deal born from turbulence at the Nou Camp rather than long-term planning on Merseyside.
Hansi Flick made the first decisive move. The Barcelona coach told Araujo he was not in his plans for the new season, a blunt message that flipped the defender’s outlook after he had initially been prepared to stay put in Catalonia. Once that conversation happened, the Uruguayan’s stance changed. He pushed for a fresh challenge, and Liverpool moved quickly to secure a loan for the rest of the campaign.
Araujo plugs an obvious gap. Centre-back has been a problem area for Liverpool, and his presence immediately thickens the options there. He can also slide across to right-back when required, a bonus for a squad that has been stretched to its limits on that flank.
That right side has been a nagging headache. Conor Bradley’s long-term injury and recurring fitness issues for Jeremie Frimpong have left Liverpool exposed, forcing constant reshuffles and emergency solutions. Araujo can help, but everyone at the club knows he is not the long-term answer in that role.
Attention Circles Back to Barcelona
According to Mundo Deportivo, Jules Kounde could be made available before the window shuts, opening the door to a second raid on the Spanish giants. Liverpool has been named among the clubs monitoring the situation, with Manchester City and Arsenal also credited with interest.
For Liverpool, the appeal is obvious. Kounde is primarily a right-back these days, but he offers high-level cover at centre-back as well, exactly the kind of hybrid defender modern elite sides crave. At 27, he is entering his prime years and has already carried a heavy load for Barcelona since arriving from Sevilla.
He has made 188 appearances for the Blaugrana, trusted across multiple seasons and systems, and has become a mainstay in Flick’s high-pressing setup. That intensity, that front-foot aggression, would translate cleanly to Andoni Iraola’s demands at Anfield.
Flick’s assessment of Kounde earlier this year underlines the profile Liverpool is targeting. “Jules is a fighter,” he said. “He’s always focused. We’re all human, and sometimes you don’t have your best day, but he’s always fighting. Even when things don’t start well. I appreciate what he’s doing. He has a top-notch mentality.”
That mentality matters as much as the positional flexibility. Liverpool’s recruitment drive is not just about filling holes; it is about stacking the dressing room with relentless characters who can handle the physical and psychological strain of a long season.
Whether Liverpool actually moves for Kounde is another question. The club is expected to prioritise other areas before committing serious funds to a specialist right-back, even one who ticks as many boxes as the France international.
