Liverpool Considering Alexis Mac Allister Sale for Camavinga Swap

Liverpool are growing increasingly open to the idea of cashing in on Alexis Mac Allister this summer, with a dramatic swap involving Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga on the table.

The Argentine midfielder was a driving force in Arne Slot’s first season, helping Liverpool reclaim the Premier League title and dictating games from the centre of the pitch. This season has been the opposite story. The 2025-26 campaign has sagged badly, and Mac Allister’s form has sagged with it.

Where he once snapped into duels and controlled possession, he now looks a step off the pace. Liverpool’s midfield has been overrun too often, and the 27-year-old has struggled to match the intensity of opponents. Inside the club, patience is thinning.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are now tempted to “cash in” on Mac Allister, viewing him as a saleable asset at a time when talks over a new contract have hit a stalemate. Interest from Spain is real. Both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are tracking him, and previous reports have suggested Liverpool would listen if an offer in the region of £80 million arrives.

The story has taken an even sharper twist behind the scenes.

Camavinga swap on the cards

Intermediaries are working on what would be one of the standout deals of the summer: Mac Allister heading to the Bernabeu, Eduardo Camavinga coming the other way.

Camavinga has been on Liverpool’s radar for a long time. There is a genuine chance Madrid will allow him to move on at the end of the season, and Liverpool see the Frenchman as a cornerstone for their next midfield rebuild.

For Mac Allister, the move would come with an added layer of intrigue. He could be reunited with Jurgen Klopp in the Spanish capital. Reports this week claim Klopp is already sketching out transfer plans for a potential future in Madrid, and Mac Allister is said to be among five key targets he wants Los Blancos to sign as part of a major squad refresh.

If that plan is accurate, it is a clear show of faith from Klopp that he can restore the Argentine to the level that lit up Anfield during their title-winning campaign.

Klopp’s reported blueprint for Madrid stretches beyond midfield. The German is also said to have urged the club to sell goalkeeper Andriy Lunin and move for Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu.

Sources have confirmed that Madrid’s interest in Mac Allister is strong, and any deal could feed into a wider reshaping of their engine room.

Curtis Jones set for exit as Liverpool eye Wharton

Liverpool’s midfield overhaul will not stop with Mac Allister. Curtis Jones is increasingly likely to leave his boyhood club in search of regular starts. Aston Villa are pushing, while Tottenham Hotspur are also in the frame, though Spurs’ move hinges on them securing their Premier League status.

Liverpool, preparing for life without both Mac Allister and Jones, have turned their attention to Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.

The club have accelerated their pursuit of the 20-year-old, carrying out extensive background work on a possible deal. Palace are expected to demand around £70m, a fee that would represent a record sale for the London club.

Wharton operates as a deep-lying playmaker and has attracted interest across the league, but Liverpool’s path looks a little clearer now. Manchester United, long-term admirers, have cooled their interest after deciding he is too similar in profile to Kobbie Mainoo. United are instead prioritising other midfielders, including Elliot Anderson, Aurelien Tchouameni and Carlos Baleba.

Liverpool, by contrast, are leaning into their advantage. Previous negotiations with Wharton’s agent have given them a head start, and sporting director Richard Hughes is pushing hard to turn that into a completed transfer.

The reshaping will not stop in midfield. Liverpool are also planning to bring in two new forwards to cover the looming loss of Mohamed Salah and to ensure they can cope without Hugo Ekitike.

Mac Allister out, Camavinga in, Wharton arriving, Jones moving on. For a club that once built its identity on a settled core, Liverpool are bracing for a summer where almost nothing in the middle of the pitch stays the same.
