Leeds United Signs Nico Elvedi: Farke's Trusted Defender

Leeds United have reunited Daniel Farke with one of his most trusted defenders, sealing the signing of Switzerland international Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal worth up to £8.5m.

The 29-year-old centre-back has agreed a three-year contract at Elland Road, ending an 11-year stay in Germany where he became a mainstay of the Monchengladbach back line, racking up 364 appearances.

Farke factor seals the deal

Elvedi made no attempt to hide the key reason behind the move: his relationship with Farke, who coached him at Monchengladbach during the 2022-23 season.

“He is also a big point for this change,” Elvedi said. “It was just one year but I loved to have him as a manager. I learned a lot from him and I will learn a lot now.”

Leeds agreed an initial fee of £6.8m with Monchengladbach, with a further £1.7m in add-ons to take the package to £8.5m.

On the pitch, Elvedi arrives with serious pedigree. He has 73 caps for Switzerland and played every minute of their run to the quarter-finals of the most recent World Cup, underlining his durability and status at international level.

Reshaping the back line

Elvedi becomes Leeds’ fourth signing of the summer window, joining goalkeeper James Trafford, winger Harry Wilson and fellow defender Tarik Muharemovic in a squad increasingly shaped in Farke’s image.

His arrival has already triggered movement. Sebastiaan Bornauw has left Elland Road to join Hamburg on a season-long loan, a clear sign that Elvedi is expected to slot straight into the heart of Leeds’ defence.

There was change at the other end of the pitch too. Earlier on Wednesday, striker Joel Piroe completed a season-long loan move to West Ham, opening up a fresh question about how Leeds will balance their attack as they reinforce at the back.

Elvedi, though, comes with a manager who knows exactly what he is getting — and a World Cup quarter-finalist’s calm in the most pressurised moments. Leeds are betting that combination can anchor the next phase of Farke’s rebuild.
