Leeds United Sign Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach

Leeds United have landed experienced Switzerland defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal worth up to £8.5m, handing Daniel Farke a familiar leader for the heart of his back line.

The 29-year-old has signed a three-year contract at Elland Road, ending an 11-year spell in Germany where he became a mainstay for Monchengladbach, racking up 364 appearances and growing into one of the Bundesliga’s most reliable defenders.

Farke reunion seals the move

Elvedi’s decision was driven heavily by the chance to work again with Farke, who coached him at Monchengladbach in the 2022-23 season.

“He is also a big point for this change,” Elvedi said of the Leeds boss. “It was just one year but I loved to have him as a manager. I learned a lot from him and I will learn a lot now.”

That connection helped Leeds get the deal over the line after Monchengladbach accepted an offer worth an initial £6.8m, with a further £1.7m in add-ons.

International pedigree at the back

Elvedi arrives with serious pedigree. He has 73 caps for Switzerland and played every minute of their run to the quarter-finals of the most recent World Cup, bringing tournament experience and composure to a Leeds defence that has been reshaped this summer.

He becomes Leeds’ fourth signing of the window, following the arrivals of James Trafford, Harry Wilson and fellow defender Tarik Muharemovic, as Farke methodically rebuilds his squad.

Knock-on moves at Elland Road

Elvedi’s signing has already triggered movement. His presence allowed Sebastiaan Bornauw to leave Elland Road for Hamburg on a season-long loan, clearing space in the defensive pecking order.

There was business at the other end of the pitch too. Earlier on Wednesday, striker Joel Piroe departed for West Ham on a season-long loan, underlining that this is a Leeds squad in transition.

Elvedi, though, walks straight into the centre of that project: a trusted Farke lieutenant, a seasoned international, and now the new anchor of Leeds United’s defence.
