Leeds United in Talks to Sign Manchester City Goalkeeper James Trafford

Leeds United are reportedly advancing discussions to bring Manchester City's goalkeeper James Trafford to Elland Road during the summer transfer window. This move follows significant changes in Leeds' goalkeeping options after Karl Darlow, who became Daniel Farke's first-choice keeper in the latter half of the 2025-26 season, left for Manchester United on a free transfer.

With Darlow's departure, Leeds sought alternatives to back up Lucas Perri. Earlier rumors suggested a potential signing of Japan's Zion Suzuki from Parma, but those talks have since cooled off. Instead, Leeds now appear focused on securing Trafford, who is eager to leave the Etihad Stadium for more playing time.

Progress in Talks and Player Interest

According to The Athletic, Leeds are making strides to finalize a deal with Trafford, an England international keen on moving to Yorkshire. Previous interest from Newcastle United has faded, leaving Leeds as the main contender for his signature.

Last season, Trafford featured in 17 games across all competitions for Manchester City but appeared only four times in the Premier League. Despite limited league action, he contributed to City's success in winning both the FA Cup and EFL Cup. The 23-year-old was signed from Burnley last summer for a fee reported between 5m and 31m, and City will likely seek a similar amount.

Leeds’ Ambitions with New Signings

After fighting hard to remain in the Premier League during the latter part of last season, Leeds now aim for a top-half finish in 2026-27. The acquisitions of defender Tarik Muharemovic for 34m and Fulham’s Harry Wilson on a free transfer signal intent to strengthen the squad.

Adding Trafford would not only replace Darlow but potentially upgrade the position. Trafford is viewed by many as a promising talent who could become England’s future number one goalkeeper.
