Kees Smit Explains Why He Declined Real Madrid Move to Stay at AZ Alkmaar

Kees Smit, the promising midfielder from AZ Alkmaar, has opened up about turning down a big transfer offer this summer, despite strong interest from Real Madrid. The 20-year-old Dutch talent surprised many by deciding to remain in the Eredivisie after important talks with his current club.

Real Madrid’s Midfield Hunt

During the recent transfer window, Real Madrid looked to strengthen their midfield options. Although they signed Bernardo Silva from Manchester City and secured young prospect Sergio Martinez, the search continued for more reinforcements. Spain’s World Cup-winning captain, Rodri, was the top target but ended up joining Barcelona instead. This led Madrid to consider other players who could immediately contribute to the team.

Kees Smit was one of the names on that shortlist. Despite multiple offers from top European clubs over the summer, the young midfielder ultimately chose to stay put.

Coach's Influence Changed His Mind

In an interview with AZ Alkmaar’s official media, Smit revealed he initially thought he would leave this summer. The turning point came when head coach Lee-Roy Echteld expressed how much he wanted him to stay.

“To be honest, at first I had the feeling that I was going to leave, but then it turned out that the coach really wanted me to stay,” Smit said. “I feel good here, surrounded by friends and family. That’s why I stayed.”

He added that AZ made it clear late in the transfer window that they didn’t want to let him go.

“Ten days ago I had a conversation and then AZ didn’t want to let me go anymore. I took it positively because I feel like I’m not done here yet.”

Ignoring Transfer Speculation

Being linked to a giant club like Real Madrid brought intense media attention, something the AZ academy graduate had to handle carefully. Instead of getting caught up in rumors, he chose to distance himself from the noise.

“At first I read a lot, but then I started to do it less, because some things are not true either. I can cope with it quite well. In short, I’m here and I’m happy to be here.”

Focus on Growth at AZ Alkmaar

Now that the transfer window has closed, Smit’s attention is fully on improving at the AFAS Stadion. Staying in a familiar setting ensures he gets regular first-team opportunities, which are crucial for a player his age under coach Echteld’s guidance.

Smit has started the season impressively, playing a key role in AZ’s success last term by helping them win the KNVB Cup. He also starred as AZ thrashed PSV Eindhoven 4-0 to claim the Johan Cruyff Shield at the season opener.

If he keeps performing at this level in the Eredivisie, top clubs like Real Madrid will likely come calling again. For now, the teenager’s focus remains on pushing AZ forward and preparing himself for a major step up down the road.
