Julian Alvarez and Simeone: Transfer Standoff at Atletico Madrid
The lights were barely on at Cerro del Espino when Julian Alvarez walked in on Wednesday. Long before the rest of the Atletico Madrid squad emerged for training, “La Araña” was already there, heading straight for Diego Simeone’s office.
This wasn’t a courtesy visit. It was a summit about his future.
A cordial meeting, a clear message
Multiple reports in Spain, including Mundo Deportivo, describe the meeting as cordial but direct. Simeone had arrived early to welcome back several players, among them Alex Baena and Marcos Llorente, yet the conversation that mattered most was with Alvarez.
It came on the back of the striker’s blunt admission during this summer’s World Cup that he wants out of Atletico. Speaking while on international duty, Alvarez did not dodge the issue:
“I don't think it's the right moment to talk, but I also don't want to hide. I try to be an honest person. I spoke with the people at the club, with those I needed to talk to, and I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream.”
Those words set the tone. Wednesday’s meeting confirmed the battle lines.
Simeone stands with the board
Alvarez may want a move. Simeone, though, is not the one opening the door.
The Argentine coach has been unwavering, publicly and privately. He had already nailed his colours to the mast on the pre-season tour in Seoul, speaking before the friendly against Manchester City and backing the firm stance of CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín.
“The situation is very clear, the entity took a decision that Miguel Ángel explained very well,” Simeone said in South Korea. The message: this is a club decision, not a coach’s whim.
That same line was repeated to Alvarez in their face-to-face meeting. The forward can push, his camp can negotiate, but the call belongs to the hierarchy.
Atletico’s position is simple: they will not sell Alvarez to a direct Spanish rival. Barcelona is his preferred destination, Arsenal and PSG are circling, but inside the Metropolitano the answer remains the same — not to them, and certainly not to Barça.
Atletico close ranks
Alvarez’s agents are in Madrid, working the phones and probing for a solution. The club’s response has been to close ranks.
There are no negotiations. No softening. No indication of a price.
Atletico paid £81.8 million to sign Alvarez from Manchester City in the summer of 2024 and tied him down until 2030. He has yet to lift a trophy with the club, coming closest as a Copa del Rey runner-up last season, but his numbers underline why the board refuse to blink: 49 appearances in all competitions, 20 goals, 9 assists in the last campaign.
Inside the sporting department, Alvarez is not seen as a saleable asset. He is seen as the cornerstone of the project.
Injury worries tighten the grip
If there was any doubt about Atletico’s resolve, Alexander Sørloth’s injury has removed it.
The Norwegian forward has recently joined the treatment room, leaving Simeone with another headache in attack. Losing Alvarez on top of that would rip a hole straight through his tactical plans for the new La Liga season.
In that context, the idea of cashing in on their main striker looks even more remote. Atletico simply cannot afford to shed firepower with the opener against Malaga looming on August 19.
Saga far from over
For now, nothing moves. On paper, Alvarez remains an Atletico Madrid player. On the pitch, he trains. On the books, he is “not for sale.”
Off the pitch, though, the game continues.
His representatives are still searching for an exit that matches his ambition and respects the club’s demands. Atletico, backed firmly by Simeone, are standing firm, convinced that keeping their World Cup winner is non-negotiable.
One side wants a dream move. The other wants its project intact. With the season about to start, something will have to give — but not, it seems, at Atletico’s end.
