Julián Álvarez Returns to Atlético Madrid Squad Amid Transfer Saga

Diego Simeone has drawn a line under the saga. Julián Álvarez is back in the Atlético Madrid squad and on the plane to Bilbao.

After a bruising week in which the 26-year-old missed two training sessions through illness and saw his dream move to Barcelona shut down by his own club, Simeone has opted for reintegration, not exile.

“Julián Álvarez will be in the squad tomorrow. He’s training well, and we expect the best from him, just as we do from all his team-mates,” Simeone told reporters ahead of the La Liga trip to Athletic Club.

From transfer storm to “opportunity”

The tension between player and club spiked when Atlético issued two statements in the space of 24 hours, making it abundantly clear: Álvarez would not be allowed to join Barça. Barcelona wanted him. He wanted Barcelona. Atlético refused to arm a direct title rival.

The door to England, though, was left ajar. The club were open to a Premier League return and even held direct talks with Arsenal. Nothing came of it. No agreement, no late twist. Álvarez stayed put, forced to reset in Madrid.

Simeone chose to frame the whole episode not as a betrayal, but as a lesson.

“For me, life is full of opportunities. And Julián now has an opportunity,” he said. “A lot of the time, we spend our lives judging, and we need to worry about doing that less and learning more. I hope this has served as a learning experience for him.”

Then came the line every striker understands: “I hope he’s happy… and he shows it by scoring goals.”

Simeone’s balancing act

This is classic Simeone territory: conflict, emotion, and a dressing room to hold together. He knows he cannot afford to turn his leading forward into an outcast.

Álvarez has delivered since arriving in Madrid, scoring 49 goals in 107 games for the Colchoneros. The numbers are those of a star. The medal collection is not. He is still waiting for his first trophy with Atlético, a frustration that feeds the desire to chase the biggest prizes elsewhere.
