Julian Alvarez Faces Hostile Reception from Atletico Madrid Fans
Julian Alvarez felt the full weight of Atletico Madrid’s anger on Sunday – and the noise around his future is only getting louder.
The Argentina forward, back in the squad after a post-World Cup final break, was named among Diego Simeone’s options for the clash with Villarreal at the Metropolitano. He had sat out the midweek win over Malaga to work on his fitness. This time, there was no hiding place.

Pressed on the supporters’ reaction, Simeone refused to be drawn into a public debate with the stands.
“No, I’m not in a position to give advice to the fans,” he said. “I think I need to focus on my work, which is to give my best on the sporting side for the good of Atletico de Madrid.
“The only thing I know is that if Atletico de Madrid wants to win a title, we have to be united. We need forwards, and we need important forwards. For that, of course, we all have to work in that direction to give the team what it needs.”
Unity, though, feels a long way off. Alvarez has been open about his desire to join Barcelona this summer, a stance that has strained his relationship with the Atletico crowd. The twist now is that Barca are understood to have moved on to other attacking targets, leaving the striker in an awkward limbo.
That shift has opened a door elsewhere. Arsenal, long linked with a move, have been handed fresh encouragement that a late deal could be revived before the window shuts. Talk of a Premier League return has gathered pace again over the weekend, with the saga taking yet another turn just as he returns to the pitch.
Whether Sunday’s cameo was Alvarez’s last act in an Atletico shirt is still unclear. The whistles suggest many at the Metropolitano have already made up their minds. The question now is whether the club – and a suitor willing to pay – follow suit before the deadline slams shut.
