Julián Álvarez's Future: Arsenal's Bid Looms as Barcelona Door Closes

Julián Álvarez’s summer has narrowed to a single escape route – and it does not run through Barcelona.

Atlético Madrid have shut that door with a bang. According to "Marca", club sources are adamant they will not sell the Argentine to their La Liga rivals, describing the chances of a deal with Barcelona as “zero”. Not slim. Not unlikely. Zero.

Álvarez, for his part, is still pushing. He has now skipped training for a third consecutive day, clinging to the idea of pulling on the Barcelona shirt before the window closes. Joan Laporta had vowed that Barça would keep going until the final hours of the market, but Atlético’s response has been to dig their heels in even deeper.

The tension between the two clubs has only grown. Atlético’s board went as far as issuing a public statement backing the internal decision: no sale to Barcelona under any circumstances. The message to their own fans, and to the Catalans, could not be clearer.

So the focus shifts abroad. Atlético are prepared to sell Álvarez to a foreign club, but only for 150 million euros. His future in Madrid was already wobbling after a flashpoint against Villarreal, when sections of the home crowd turned on their own star and Álvarez walked straight down the tunnel alone. That moment felt like a fracture. It now looks like a turning point.

Into that space step Arsenal.

The Premier League side have been tracking Álvarez closely and see him as a marquee addition to their project. The feeling is mutual: the Argentine is attracted by the sporting plan in north London and the prospect of leading the line at the Emirates Stadium.

Yet the biggest complication right now is not tactical or financial. It is bureaucratic.

Álvarez lives in Spain with his family, and any move to England would mean navigating Britain’s tightened post‑Brexit immigration rules. Some of his relatives previously held residency permits from his earlier spell in England, but those documents have since expired, adding another layer of difficulty to any relocation.

There is one ray of clarity. Journalist Verónica Brunati has outlined that Álvarez’s wife should be able to obtain residency as the dependent partner of a player on a work visa, which would allow her to live legally with him in the United Kingdom. That eases part of the family puzzle, but not all of it.

Arsenal believe they can solve the visa and residency issues if Álvarez gives the green light to the move. Inside the club, there is confidence they can put together a complete package – sporting, financial, and administrative – in time.

What they have not done yet is make the decisive move. No formal, knockout offer has landed on Atlético’s desk, even though Arsenal sense that a deal is possible before the window shuts on 1 September.

Five days remain. Barcelona are out. Atlético are waiting. Arsenal hover as the only realistic escape route.

Now the question is simple: does Julián Álvarez walk through it?
