John Obi Mikel Predicts Adam Wharton Move to Manchester United

John Obi Mikel has nailed his colours to the mast over Adam Wharton – and he’s painted them Manchester United red.

The former Chelsea midfielder believes the Crystal Palace starlet is destined for Old Trafford, predicting a move as early as next year despite United’s heavy summer spend in midfield.

Wharton, 22, remained at Selhurst Park throughout the window, even as interest gathered from across the Premier League. Transfermarkt currently value him at £60 million, a figure that underlines just how quickly his stock has risen.

United were firmly among his admirers heading into the summer. Scouts liked what they saw, discussions were held, but no formal bid ever arrived. INEOS chose a different route.

Instead of gambling big on Wharton, they tore into Michael Carrick’s midfield and rebuilt it piece by piece. Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba and Youri Tielemans all walked through the door, with the trio costing an upfront combined fee of £148 million.

That level of investment has not dampened Obi Mikel’s enthusiasm.

Speaking on his podcast, he was unequivocal about Wharton’s ceiling. “I love him! I love Adam Wharton, I'm a big, big fan,” he said, before going a step further with a bold prediction about the youngster’s future.

“I think he's going to go places, though, I think next season he will leave Crystal Palace. I think they want to keep him for one more season. I see him going to Manchester United next season.”

It’s a striking call from a man who knows what it takes to control a Premier League midfield. But it jars with the current direction inside Old Trafford.

United’s gaze shifts away from Wharton

For all Obi Mikel’s confidence, Wharton is no longer viewed as a concrete target in M16.

INEOS have already poured serious money into Carrick’s engine room this year. With three new midfielders in place and a clear attempt to reshape the core of the side, the expectation around the club is that next summer’s energy will move elsewhere.

The spotlight is heading towards the back line.

United opted against signing a single defender over the last few months, a call that raised eyebrows given the demands of a season that includes a return to Champions League football. One significant injury in defence could twist Carrick’s campaign in an instant.

That calculated risk has only heightened the sense that the next major outlay will be on the back four, not another central midfielder, however talented.

Lewis Hall lined up as long-term priority

The long-range planning is already under way.

As things stand, United’s priority signing for 2027 is believed to be Lewis Hall. Inside the club, he is viewed as the ideal long-term successor to Luke Shaw, who turns 32 that year and is already into the final nine months of his current deal at Old Trafford.

Hall is being earmarked as the next piece of the defensive puzzle, a future cornerstone rather than a short-term patch.

So Obi Mikel’s vision of Wharton in United red next season collides with a different reality: a club that has just rebuilt its midfield and is bracing for a defensive overhaul instead.
