JJ Gabriel's Manchester United Future in Jeopardy Amid Barcelona Talks

JJ Gabriel’s Manchester United future is hanging by a thread – and the teenager is now in Barcelona, pushing hard for a way out.

The 15-year-old, one of the most talked‑about prospects in United’s academy, has already formally asked the club to cancel his registration. Multiple sources now say he has travelled to Spain to sit down with Barcelona officials, in what looks like his boldest move yet to force a departure.

United, though, are digging in.

From quiet concern to full-blown stand-off

Concerns at Old Trafford over keeping Gabriel first surfaced publicly on August 13, when TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey revealed that United feared losing the youngster. Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona were all monitoring the situation, sensing an opening.

By September 15, the story had escalated. Gabriel had informed United he wanted to leave and, crucially, had sent a formal notice requesting his academy registration be cancelled with immediate effect. If that request were granted, he would become a free agent just as he turns 16 next month.

That birthday – October 6 – is the key date in this saga. Once he turns 16, Gabriel will be able to pursue a move to an EU club such as Real Madrid or Barcelona. His Irish passport only smooths that path, giving him the freedom of movement that many young English-based talents lack.

Contract complications and United’s stance

On paper, United still hold a strong hand. Gabriel’s academy registration runs until the end of the 2026/27 season. While the player has formally asked to be de-registered, the club has the right to challenge that request, and sources have been clear: they intend to do exactly that.

ESPN reported this week that United have no intention of cancelling the deal they have in place with Gabriel. They want him to stay, and they are prepared to fight to keep him.

Fabrizio Romano has also reported that United were planning talks aimed at changing Gabriel’s mind, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe personally involved in the effort to convince the teenager his future lies at Old Trafford.

The club’s position is firm. The player’s actions suggest his resolve is firmer.

Barcelona move gathers pace

On Friday, Bailey revealed that both Real Madrid and Barcelona had already held positive talks with Gabriel’s camp. The two Spanish giants have emerged as the most realistic options should he secure a move abroad.

Now the situation has shifted again – this time to Catalonia.

At 3:19pm on September 18, Manchester Evening News Chief Manchester United Correspondent Tyrone Marshall posted on X: “JJ Gabriel in Barcelona today for talks over a move to the Nou Camp. United will reject his request to be de-registered but threat of a move on October 6, which would require FIFA approval, remains #mufc”.

Just 26 minutes later, Marshall followed up: “JJ Gabriel closer to Manchester United exit despite club rejecting his request to be de-registered. In Spain and holding talks with Barcelona today. Reports in Spain suggest he will get the EU passport he needs next week #mufc”.

The sense of momentum is obvious. Gabriel is not just a name on a scouting list anymore; he is physically in Barcelona, sitting across the table from the Spanish champions.

Real Madrid-leaning outlet Marca has also reported his presence in the city, underlining how seriously the Spanish market is taking this chase. Journalist Ben Jacobs backed that up, posting on X at 3:23pm: “JJ Gabriel is in Barcelona for talks. Barcelona and Real Madrid viewed as the most viable contenders if Gabriel goes abroad.”

A race against the calendar

So the battle lines are clear. United intend to reject his de-registration request. Gabriel, armed with an Irish passport and approaching a pivotal 16th birthday, is actively exploring a future away from Manchester.

If he pushes ahead with a move on October 6, FIFA approval will be required, adding another layer of complexity to an already tangled case. But his trip to Barcelona suggests he is ready to test every boundary to engineer the move he wants.

United have lost big talents from their academy before. The question now is whether they can stop JJ Gabriel from becoming the next one to walk away.
