JJ Gabriel on Verge of Barcelona Move as Manchester United Faces Talent Loss
JJ Gabriel is in Barcelona with his representatives as the 15-year-old Manchester United prodigy moves closer to a shock exit from Old Trafford.
The teenager, regarded as one of the brightest prospects in United’s academy, has drawn firm interest from a host of European giants. Premier League clubs are watching him closely, while Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are all circling after Gabriel and his camp formally requested to leave United.
United still hope to keep him. He is under contract until the end of the season and the club’s hierarchy have been trying to change his mind. But the mood around the situation has shifted. Those close to it increasingly expect him to move on.
Formal request after hat-trick display
The turning point came last Thursday in the UEFA Youth League. United thrashed Sabah 5-0. Gabriel stole the show with a hat-trick.
Soon after that performance, he and his representatives submitted a formal request to be de-registered.
Since then, he has not trained with United.
The timing has raised eyebrows. On Friday, England’s latest youth squads were announced. Gabriel, who has represented England at U17 level, was not named in any of them.
Loophole route to Europe
Behind the scenes, clubs across the continent have been studying a familiar route.
There is a belief, based on an existing precedent and a FIFA loophole, that Gabriel could leave United for a European club once he turns 16 on October 6, if he secures a European passport through either of his parents.
That would not be straightforward. Any transfer would still require FIFA approval. But it offers a potential pathway that major clubs are prepared to explore, and Barcelona have moved quickly by hosting the player and his entourage for talks.
Carrick treads carefully
Asked about Gabriel on Friday, United head coach Michael Carrick chose his words with care and stressed the need to protect the youngster.
“I think he's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important that we certainly don't play anything out here,” Carrick said.
“I think the exposure and the scrutiny and everything, you've got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything, so the situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's okay is the important thing.”
No ultimatums. No public pressure. Just a clear message: the player’s wellbeing comes first, even as one of the club’s most exciting talents considers walking away.
‘Massive blow’ warning from Merson
Outside Carrick’s calm tone, the reaction has been far more blunt.
Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson did not hold back when assessing what Gabriel’s departure would mean for United.
“First of all, he's an unbelievable talent,” Merson said. “The problem now is with the lad and probably his agents and his family – I don't know him so I'm only thinking from the outside.
“When you're watching Max Dowman at Arsenal and Rio Ngumoha getting given a chance at Liverpool and doing very well, he's probably thinking, 'I should be playing at Man Utd now as well'.”
For Merson, this is the new reality of elite academies. Young players see their peers breaking through at 16 and want the same stage, instantly.
“This is the problem you're going to have with the kids of this day and age,” he added. “They're so talented that they want to play straight away. When I was playing, it was unheard of at 16.
“It'll be a massive blow for Man Utd. Believe me, this kid is an unbelievable talent. They'll have every club in the world wanting him.”
United now stand at a familiar crossroads: a teenage star, a European queue forming, and a clock ticking towards his 16th birthday. The question is no longer who wants JJ Gabriel – it’s whether Manchester United can convince him that his future still lies in red.
