Jim McGuinness Continues as Donegal Senior Football Manager for 2027

Jim McGuinness will stay on as Donegal senior football manager for the 2027 season, extending his second coming in the role into a fourth year.

Donegal GAA confirmed the decision on Monday evening after a County Committee meeting, also announcing that Mickey McCann will remain in charge of the county’s senior hurlers for another two years. McCann has held that post since 2018.

“Following a meeting of the County Committee, Donegal confirm the appointment of Michael McCann as Senior Hurling Manager for a two year term and Jim McGuinness as Senior Football manager for a one year term,” the statement read.

McGuinness, 53, returned to the Donegal hot seat on a three-year deal with an option of a fourth and has quickly restored the county as a force in Ulster. Under his guidance in this second spell, Donegal have claimed back-to-back Ulster titles in 2024 and 2025 and reached the All-Ireland final in 2025.

Earlier this year, they added more silverware with a Football League Division One final victory over Kerry in March, a result that suggested Donegal were ready to muscle their way back into the elite conversation.

The championship told a different story.

Donegal’s summer unravelled with a quarter-final defeat to Down in the Ulster SFC, followed by a heartbreaking extra-time loss to Dublin in Round 3 of the All-Ireland series. A league title, but a campaign that ended with a sharp sense of underachievement.

McGuinness, of course, is still defined in many eyes by the seismic breakthrough of 2012, when he led Donegal to All-Ireland glory in his first spell in charge. Now the question hangs over his fourth year back at the helm.
