Jhon Lucumi Joins Juventus as Defensive Pillar
Juventus have their new defensive pillar. Jhon Lucumi is in black and white.
The club have struck a deal with Bologna worth an initial €18 million, with a further €2 million tied to potential add-ons, to bring the Colombian centre-back to Turin. Lucumi has signed a four-year contract, earning €3 million net per season, a commitment that plants him firmly at the heart of the Bianconeri’s long-term plans.
This is not a move of convenience. It is a choice. Lucumi made Juventus his priority, turning down other suitors to force through the switch to Turin, a statement of ambition from a defender entering what should be the prime of his career.
From Cali to Turin
Lucumi’s journey began at Deportivo Cali, where he broke into the first team as a 17-year-old. From there he crossed the Atlantic and grew into one of Belgium’s standout defenders at Genk, earning a reputation for timing, composure and a left foot that can start attacks as easily as it ends them.
Juventus captured that narrative neatly in their official announcement, hailing him as a player “at the peak of his powers, ready to make an immediate contribution to the team ahead of the 2026/27 season,” before signing off with a simple message: “Welcome to Juventus, Jhon!”
Bologna’s rock at the back
Bologna know exactly what Juventus are getting. Since arriving at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara in the summer of 2022, Lucumi has been a constant. Across four seasons he racked up 152 appearances in all competitions, an ever-present pillar in a side that climbed into the Champions League and refused to be intimidated by anyone.
He even left his mark on Europe’s elite stage, scoring one of his two Bologna goals during their Champions League adventure. It was the kind of moment that underlined how far he had come from those early days in Colombia and Belgium.
Straight into the Juventus plan
Now the move is complete, there will be no easing-in period. Lucumi is set to join tactical sessions with his new teammates immediately, dropped straight into the demands of a Juventus side reshaping its backline and identity.
The first big test is already circled on the calendar. Juventus open their 2026-27 Serie A campaign away to Frosinone on Sunday, August 23. All signs point to that fixture doubling as Lucumi’s competitive debut, the Colombian marshalling a new-look defence in a new era for the club.
A new season, a rebuilt backline, and a centre-back who chose this stage. Now he has to own it.
