Jeff Bezos-Led Group Close to Acquiring One-Third Stake in Liverpool FC
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly part of a group that is close to buying about one-third of Premier League club Liverpool FC. The consortium is led by Amit Bhatia, who is linked to India steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal as his son-in-law. Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin also joins the investor lineup.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which owns Liverpool, confirmed last month that Bhatia's team had expressed interest in a strategic minority investment. An FSG spokesperson said, "An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club." Bhatia was previously a shareholder in Queens Park Rangers, a Championship side.
The news outlet Sky reported the deal is nearing completion, with FSG expected to announce it soon. This deal would value the club, winners of 20 English league titles, at around $6 billion. For context, FSG purchased Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million ($405 million) and sold a minority share last year to US private equity firm Dynasty Equity.
Jeff Bezos, aged 62, is one of the richest people globally, with Forbes estimating his net worth above $280 billion. Saverin's fortune stands near $33 billion. Bezos has looked into acquiring NFL teams like the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders before but did not proceed with those purchases.
The influx of American capital into the Premier League continues with this potential investment. Liverpool captured the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season under Arne Slot, though the Dutch manager was dismissed in May following a challenging campaign.
