Jamie Carragher Slams Arsenal's Rumors on Myles Lewis-Skelly
Jamie Carragher has slammed the idea that Arsenal would even entertain selling Myles Lewis-Skelly, branding the young midfielder “pretty special” and insisting he “can’t believe” the club would consider letting him go.
Arsenal, fresh from their Premier League title win, have spent the summer acting like champions. Christos Tzolis is in, Bruno Guimaraes is in, Piero Hincapie is now permanent. Big moves, big money, big intent.
Amid that flurry, one rumour cut against the grain: Lewis-Skelly, the academy gem who impressed in midfield at the back end of last season, was said to have been offered to Chelsea and Manchester United as part of the Gunners’ reshaping. That suggestion stopped Carragher in his tracks.
Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, the former Liverpool defender laid out his disbelief at the talk surrounding the 19-year-old.
“That’s the thing that was a little bit strange about it. It felt almost like Arsenal offered Manchester United Myles Lewis-Skelly,” Carragher said. “It wasn’t Myles Lewis-Skelly saying, I want to leave, or his people putting something out. That’s where the shock came from, not so much the players’ side of it.
“I still can’t believe it.”
Carragher’s astonishment is rooted in what Lewis-Skelly has already shown on the biggest stages. The teenager has not yet put together a full, dominant season in the first team, but when he has been trusted, he has not shrunk.
“Obviously, last season wasn’t great for him for the whole season,” Carragher admitted. “But when a young player has already put in performances like I’ve seen him put in at the Bernabeu – maybe over a year or 18 months ago, at left-back, he was running the game at the Bernabeu – and then his performance in the final in central midfield against Paris Saint-Germain.
“You can’t play at that level unless you’re pretty special at that age. All young players have ups and downs. Last season he didn’t play as much as he probably would have liked.
“But his ceiling is so high for the performances he’s already put in as a 20-year-old kid. I couldn’t believe that Arsenal would even think about letting him go. It does feel like a strange one.”
The message was clear: you don’t casually float that kind of talent around the league.
Yet as the noise built, the story started to unravel. Reports that Lewis-Skelly had been “offered” to Chelsea and United have since been firmly knocked down.
Caught Offside, The Athletic and the Daily Mail have all stated that Arsenal have made no such approach to their Premier League rivals regarding the midfielder. No shop window, no quiet feelers, nothing.
Mark Brus, writing for Caught Offside, went as far as to say he had “double and triple checked” the situation with his sources. His conclusion was blunt: there is “no desire for Arsenal to sell Lewis-Skelly, nor does the player himself wish to leave.”
The idea that Chelsea and Manchester United had “rejected” Lewis-Skelly has also been dismissed. As Brus put it, “you can’t reject a player who isn’t for sale and who isn’t looking for a move.”
So the picture looks very different now. The champions have strengthened heavily, but their “special” academy product is not being pushed towards the exit. He stays in north London, his ceiling untouched, his future still tied to the club where he has already shown flashes of something rare.
If Arsenal are serious about building a dynasty rather than just defending a title, keeping players like Lewis-Skelly might end up being as important as any marquee signing.
