James Ward-Prowse Returns to Southampton: A Homecoming

James Ward-Prowse is back where it all began.

Southampton have re-signed their former captain from Championship rivals West Ham United, bringing the 31-year-old home on a two-year deal worth just under £1m.

For Saints supporters, it is a reunion loaded with history. Ward-Prowse joined the club as an eight-year-old, climbed through the academy and went on to make 410 first-team appearances before leaving in 2023 for West Ham.

“It feels a bit surreal,” he admitted. “The last couple of days have been pretty intense, but I'm delighted to be back, and to be wearing the red and white again is truly special.

“It's the place I call home, obviously having come through the academy since I was eight. It was an incredible journey up until the point that I left, but home is a special place and I always had it in the back of my mind that it was somewhere that I wanted to be.

“I'm here today very excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

His time away was busy. Ward-Prowse made 75 appearances for West Ham and squeezed in two loan spells, first at Nottingham Forest and then at Burnley, where he played 14 times last season. He never quite escaped the feeling of unfinished business on the south coast.

At Southampton, his legacy is already written in numbers that matter. He scored 55 goals and delivered 52 assists, his right foot becoming one of the most feared weapons in the Premier League. Seventeen of those goals came from direct free-kicks in the top flight, leaving him just one behind David Beckham’s record of 18.

That dead-ball threat helped carry him into the England setup, where he has earned 11 caps and scored twice.

Now, with a contract signed and the familiar surroundings of St Mary’s around him, Ward-Prowse steps back into a club he once led. The free-kick specialist returns not as a prodigy, but as a seasoned midfielder with a point to prove and a home crowd ready to judge whether his second act can outshine the first.
