Ismail Kartal Remains Fenerbahce Coach Amid Turmoil
Ismail Kartal is staying put.
Fenerbahce moved quickly on Friday night to shut down the turmoil swirling around their head coach, issuing an official statement confirming that Kartal remains in charge of the first team. Any lingering doubt evaporated on Saturday morning, when the club’s social media channels posted images of the 62-year-old back on the training pitch, directing the session as if nothing had happened.
It was a direct rebuttal to reports that crisis talks with club official Oguz Cetin had collapsed. They had not. Kartal was back at work.
Just 24 hours earlier, the picture looked very different. In the raw aftermath of Fenerbahce’s 1-1 draw with Roma in the Champions League on Thursday, Kartal stunned Turkish football by announcing his resignation live via Anadolu Agency.
He praised his players first, insisting they had executed his game plan perfectly.
“First of all, I congratulate my players for carrying out the tasks I assigned for tonight's match to the letter. We played football worthy of the Champions League. We could have won the match; we had clear chances. The match ended in a draw, and I am proud of my players,” he said, before dropping the bombshell. “Tonight, I am resigning from my position – never to return. I extend my heartfelt thanks to my players.”
The words sounded final. The president had other ideas.
Yildirim steps in
Aziz Yildirim moved swiftly to pull his coach back from the brink. Speaking at a separate press conference not long after Kartal’s outburst, the Fenerbahce president both defended his manager and flatly rejected the resignation.
He pointed to the toxic atmosphere around the touchline and online as the trigger for Kartal’s emotional reaction, highlighting an incident that encapsulated the tension.
“You saw the state Ismail was in. Can a person endure that much distress? They threw a water bottle at Ismail Kartal's head. We saw it. That is why he is upset,” Yildirim said. Then he made the club’s stance crystal clear. “Ismail Kartal remains in his post. I said [to Kartal]: ‘You will continue,’ and that was that.”
The message from the hierarchy was unambiguous: the coach stays, and the storm must be ridden out from within.
Domestic pressure building
Now comes the hard part. Emotion has to give way to points.
Fenerbahce return to Super Lig duty on Monday night when they host Gaziantep FK, and the league table leaves Kartal with no room to breathe. An 18-team division, and Fenerbahce are sitting 11th. For a club of this size, that is a problem, not a blip.
The Champions League draw with Roma offered pride and a reminder of the team’s potential. The domestic picture tells a harsher story. Kartal must translate European-level performances into consistent league results, and fast.
Three points against Gaziantep are not just desirable; they are non-negotiable. Victory would ease internal tensions, cool the temperature around the dugout and give frustrated supporters something tangible to cling to after a chaotic week.
Kartal has his job. Now he has to prove he can keep it.
