Inter Milan Rejects Barcelona's Bid for Federico Dimarco
Inter Milan have drawn a clear line in the sand: Federico Dimarco is not for sale. Not to Barcelona, not to anyone.
The Catalan club’s late push for the Italy international in the final days of the transfer window jolted the Nerazzurri hierarchy into action, and the response from San Siro has been swift – a new long-term contract is now on the table, one that would tie the left-back to Inter until 2030.
Barça’s late move lights the fuse
Spanish outlet Sport revealed that Dimarco’s name surfaced in Barcelona’s frantic end-of-window planning. Talks even went as far as exploring a straight swap: Dimarco to Barça, Alejandro Balde to Inter.
It never advanced beyond that. No agreement, no breakthrough, no green light.
But the mere idea of losing one of Simone Inzaghi’s most important players was enough to set off alarm bells in Milan.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter immediately shifted into protection mode and began working on a renewal that would stretch Dimarco’s stay three more years beyond his current deal.
A surprise snub, then a turning point in Madrid
Dimarco, now 28, is currently contracted until 2027, with an option for an additional year. That option, though, remained untouched this summer – something that clearly caught the defender off guard.
He did not hide it. Recently, he admitted: “I was expecting the club to call me to talk to me after what I did last year.”
That call finally came. And it came in Madrid.
On the eve of Inter’s Champions League clash with Real, new sporting director Dario Baccin met with Dimarco’s agent, Arturo Canales, in the Spanish capital. That summit, reported by Gazzetta, has accelerated the process and laid the foundations for a deal that could run to 2030.
The negotiations are being built around Dimarco’s current salary of 4 million euros net. It is a substantial figure, but one that reflects his status as one of the standout left-backs in world football right now.
Barcelona wait and watch
Barcelona, though, have not turned the page completely. They are keeping a close eye on how the talks develop.
The situation in their own squad makes it easy to understand why. Hansi Flick has only one recognised left-back: Alejandro Balde. And at the moment, the youngster does not feature in the coach’s plans.
That leaves Barça exposed on the flank and searching for experience, reliability and immediate impact. Dimarco ticks every box. He is in his prime, established at the highest level, and comfortable in both a back four and a more advanced wing-back role.
For now, though, all roads lead back to Milan. Inter have moved to protect one of their key assets, the player has made clear he expected recognition after a standout season, and the groundwork for a long-term pact is in motion.
If the renewal is signed, Barcelona’s late gamble in the window will not just have failed – it will have helped lock Dimarco into the San Siro for the rest of his peak years.
