Inter’s €30m statement and Chivu’s defensive rebuild
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Inter have tabled an offer worth over €30 million as they look to reinforce Christian Chivu’s back line. It is a bid that underlines the Nerazzurri’s intent, not just to add depth, but to make Spence a central part of their defensive reset.
For Spence, it would be a return to familiar ground. The former Nottingham Forest standout previously spent time in Serie A on loan at Genoa, and Inter see that experience as a foundation rather than a footnote.
The Italian club’s push comes on the back of a heavy summer of spending at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Spurs have reshaped their defence and, in the process, squeezed Spence towards the exit.
Player says yes – but Spurs hold the line
The green light from the player is already in. According to GiveMeSport, Spence has reached full agreement on personal terms with the Milan club and is keen to test himself again in Serie A.
The deal is far from done, though.
Tottenham are standing firm on their valuation. Inter’s proposal of around €30m (£25.6m) is sizeable, yet reports indicate Spurs want at least €35m (£30m) plus performance-related add-ons before they sign off on the sale.
Club chiefs in north London know they are not negotiating in a vacuum. Interest from other Premier League sides has been logged, and they believe Spence’s price should reflect both his age and the surge in his reputation after a standout World Cup with England.
Tottenham’s defensive shake-up leaves Spence boxed in
Spence’s likely departure comes in the middle of a sweeping overhaul of Tottenham’s back line.
Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke have all arrived in this window, each one nudging the pecking order a little further away from the 25-year-old. On top of that, first-choice right-back Pedro Porro has signed a new long-term contract, nailing down his place and tightening competition on both flanks.
Right now, Robertson, Destiny Udogie and Porro all sit ahead of Spence in the full-back rotation. The route to regular minutes in north London has narrowed to a sliver.
For a player looking to build on international momentum, a move abroad suddenly looks less like an option and more like a necessity.
Inter pull clear as rivals fade
Inter are not the first major club to circle this summer. Manchester United and Liverpool had both been linked with Spence at different stages of the window, raising the prospect of a domestic tug-of-war.
That battle never truly materialised.
Romano has clarified that Liverpool’s supposed interest was inflated and that nothing advanced between the club and the player. With Anfield effectively out of the picture and no concrete move from United, Inter have been able to accelerate.
They now sit in pole position, the only side with a formal bid on the table and an agreement in place with the player.
What remains is the hard part: boardroom negotiations between Tottenham and Inter over those final few million. One club holding firm, the other pushing to close.
